Collins, Big Reds Run Past Tigers, 40-21
Chad Collins scored four touchdowns and ran for 229 yards to lead the Parkersburg Big Reds to a 40-21 victory over host Marietta Friday night at Don Drumm Field.
Collins got plenty of help from sophomore Adam Lindamood and an outstanding blocking effort from his offensive line as PHS had to withstand several big plays by the home-standing Tigers to register its first win ever under new head coach Don Reeves.
The Big Reds piled up a whopping 472 yards in total offense as they evened their record at 1-1. In addition to Collins' huge total on the ground, which was achieved on 18 carries and was the 19th best single game effort in the history of PHS, Lindamood picked up 69 yards on 10 carries and scored his team's first two touchdowns while quarterback Alex Ash completed nine of 14 passes for 119 yards. The Red and White had 23 first downs.
Marietta suffered its initial defeat under first-year head coach Craig Farnsworth, a former PHS coach and player, but did come up with several big plays which led to three touchdowns. Morgan Wynn finished with 163 yards on 22 attempts and scored one touchdown.
The Big Reds scored on their first possession, going 80 yards on nine plays in three and a half minutes. A 31 yard pass from Ash to Adrian Webster was the big play while Lindamood ended the drive with a five yard run up the middle behind some big blocks by John Weber and Justin Johnson. Jeff Lantz missed the extra point kick to make it 6-0 with 8:30 left in the first quarter.
Marietta was able to answer the score thanks mainly to a 63 yard run up the sideline by Matt McKitrick to the PHS five yard line. Mitch Gearhart got the TD on a four yard run on a pitch and cutback. Matt Morrison kicked the extra point for a 7-6 lead with 5:40 on the first period clock.
The Tigers then tried an onside kick and recovered the ball on the Parkersburg 44 yard line but the Big Red defense held and forced a punt.
Starting from their own 29, the Big Reds needed just four plays to score, thanks to a 15 yard completion to Seth Frederick and then a 31 yard run by Collins. Frederick then caught a six yard pass to the Marietta three yard line and on the next carry, Weber and Robert Kelley led a huge blocking effort that enabled Lindamood to score with 2:36 left in the quarter. Lantz then kicked the extra point to put PHS on top 13-7.
Marietta got another big run on its first offensive play following that TD. Wynn burst of the middle and into the open, going 64 yards before being drug down from behind by Kevin Minehart. A couple of penalties pushed Marietta back to the 24 but a couple of passes produced a go-ahead score when Justin Futrell hit McKitrick in the right corner of the end zone from nine yards away to tie the score with 37 seconds left in the initial period. Morrison's kick put the Tigers up 14-13.
It took just 51 seconds for the Big Reds to go ahead for good, covering 80 yards on just three plays. A pass to Minehart netted eight yards and a 15 yard scramble by Ash took the ball to near midfield. After a penalty against PHS, Collins took the handoff and burst up the middle 47 yards for his first TD and a 19-14 lead with 11:46 left in the half.
After forcing Marietta to punt on its next series, PHS started on its own 40 and in five plays found the end zone again on a 25 yard run up the middle behind some huge holes fashioned by the offensive line. Lantz kicked the extra point to make it 26-14 with 7:33 left in the first half.
The Big Reds got the ball back early in the second half despite a sensational take-away reception by Marietta's Eli Parmiter that netted 36 yards to near midfield. Starting from its own 28, PHS took just six plays to score again with Collins again going up the middle for the touchdown, this time on a delayed handoff from six yards away. Collins had a 35 yard run to set up his score, which came with 7:57 on the clock in the third period. Lantz again kicked the extra point for a 33-14 margin.
Marietta's final score came with 8:28 remaining in the game on a drive which consumed 14 plays and nearly seven minutes to cover 91 yards. A third down run of 25 yards by Wynn was the big play on the drive, which saw a near brawl break out after Wynn carried the ball to the PHS two yard line and was tackled by Corey Ohse. Wynn then pulled Ohse back down to the ground to start a pushing match which resulted in multiple penalty walk-offs and Ohse being ejected from the game. The touchdown came on a one yard drive by Wynn.
But PHS produced an insurance score on an 80 yard drive that took nine plays and eight 4:33 off the clock. The TD came on an eight yard run by Collins behind the blocking of Wes O'Brien. That score and extra point by Lantz with 3:55 remaining iced the contest and allowed PHS to play its reserves for the last series.
Robert Kelley was the leading tackler for PHS with nine stops while Kevin Minehart had two tackles for loss and Matt Santer had two pass breakups.
