Mud-Loving Lindamood Powers PHS to 29-13 Revenge Win Over S.Charleston
SOUTH CHARLESTON - Adam Lindamood scored three touchdowns and ran for 220 yards in the mud to power the Parkersburg Big Reds to a 29-13 revenge win over South Charleston here Friday and end the Black Eagles' season and hopes of making the playoffs.
The victory avenged a 62-7 playoff loss to the Eagles in their last meeting of 2010 and gave the sixth-ranked Big Reds their seventh win against two defeats heading into the regular season finale next Friday in Parkersburg against top ranked and undefeated George Washington. The win also assured PHS a good spot in the playoffs and set the stage for a possible upset victory against GW which would give the Big Reds a home playoff game through probably the first two rounds of the playoffs.
The rainy, muddy conditions seemed tailor-made for the Big Reds, whose recuperated offensive line dominated their opponents and gave huge holes for the hard-running Lindamood to take advantage of on most of his 38 carries. The junior running back put together the 22nd highest single-game rushing total in PHS history and joined his older brothers Joey and Matt to become the first trio of brothers to each rush for at least 200 yards in a game. His bursts up the middle wore down the South Charleston defense and the most common sight of the game was two or three defenders being carried or run over the Big Red standout.
As if his two rushing touchdowns were not enough, Lindamood caught two passes for another 31 yards and a touchdown.
Alex Ash completed 11 of 20 passes for 160 yards and ran for one touchdown. Five receivers caught two passes from Ash with Matt Santer returning to the lineup from injury to gain 59 yards through the air while Jeremy Bell had 38, Skyler Terrell 12 and Adrian Webster 14. Hunter Shank had the other reception, good for six yards.
As a team, PHS amassed 394 yards on 68 plays while South Charleston had 126 yards rushing on 31 attempts and completed six of 13 passes for 96 yards with one interception. PHS led in first downs 19-9.
A 48 yard kickoff return by Terrell to start the game set the stage for a 33 yard scoring drive that took nine plays to finish with Ash doing the honors on a sneak over right guard with 7:42 left in the first period. Cody Roney kicked the extra point.
Four plays later South Charleston showed its big play capability when Jonathan Alexander found Trai Gordon on a 67 yard pass-and-run touchdown play with 5:37 remaining in the first quarter.
After a PHS fumble and a South Charleston punt, the Big Reds were back in business on the SC 43 yard line and scored immediately on a touchdown pass to Bell. But the play was wiped out by a blocking penalty - the first of three PHS touchdown passes to be erased by blocking penalties on the night.
But that turned out to be only a temporary setback as Lindamood ran four straight times up the middle for the final 25 yards and a touchdown with 1:57 left in the first period.
A fumble recovery by Randall Taylor gave PHS back the ball two plays later and despite having a 67 yard TD pass to Santer called back for an illegal block, the Big Reds wound up gaining 53 yards on that play anyway and three plays later Lindamood went over right guard through a huge hole for the final 15 yards to the end zone with just 53 seconds gone in the second quarter. Roney's kick was short as he slipped in the mud but PHS had a 20-6 lead.
PHS got the ball back with 2:04 left in the first half and put together a 62 yard, six play drive with Lindamood taking a screen pass out of the backfield and turning it into a 34 yard touchdown play with 34 seconds left before intermission which ran the score to 27-6 after the extra point.
Lindamood had 128 yards rushing on 19 first half carries.
The Big Red defense forced a three-and-out by South Charleston to start the second half and a steady diet of Lindamood up the middle moved the ball from the PHS 38 to the Eagles' 20 from where Ash found Bell for a 20 yard touchdown reception - which, of course, was called back for an illegal blocking penalty. A sack and an incomplete halted that PHS scoring opportunity on the 27 yard line.
A 42 yard run by Alexander led to South Charleston's second touchdown - a nine yard pass to Trevand Reese on the first play of the fourth quarter. The extra point kick cut the lead to 27-13 but the fourth quarter saw the field conditions take over as there four fumbles with each team losing one. The Big Red fumble recovery - by Bell - came on the South Charleston 12 yard line but a penalty and a bad snap, which sailed over Ash's head and directly into the arms of Lindamood, helped stop the Big Reds on the Eagles' eight yard line. But PHS was able to get points on the very next play as Alexander tried to run out of his own end zone only to be caught from behind by Bell for a safety with 2:36 left in the game.
