Ash Throws 4 TD Passes, Runs For a 5th as PHS Raps Riverside 37-24
QUINCY, WV - Rainy weather didn't ground the Alex Ash Air Show as the Big Red senior quarterback threw for four touchdowns and over 200 yards to lead the sixth-ranked Parkersburg football team to a 37-24 victory over Riverside.
Finding Jeremy Bell and Tre Jackson in the end zone twice each, Ash tossed at least four TD's for the third time in his career and moved into third place on the all-time career touchdown passing list at PHS with a total of 32. The rain didn't seem to bother the veteran signal caller as he completed 16 of 23 passes for 209 yards and also scored a touchdown on a sneak in the second quarter. Ash also passed the 3,000 yard mark for his career, moving into third place behind Marc Kimes and Eric Ranson with 3,101 total air yards.
In upping their record to 5-1, the Big Reds also got an outstanding ground game from sophomore Chandler Hamilton, who ran 25 times for 155 yards and scored the game's first touchdown.
Bell wound up with six receptions for 73 yards as PHS ran 70 offensive plays (to just 43 for the host Warriors) for 405 yards in total offense. Jackson caught three passes for 71 yards while Randall Taylor and Hamilton each caught two passes with Huntar Shank, Skyler Terrell and Adrian Webster also making catches.
Riverside, which dropped to 2-3 and was playing without leading rusher Leon Mitchell who had been suspended for a school infraction, managed just 285 yards in total offense and scored just one offensive touchdown. The Warriors returned two kickoffs for touchdowns and got a blocked punt to set up a 30 yard Derek Chestnut field goal.
The Big Reds started slowly, fumbling the ball away on their first possession after driving to the Riverside 28 yard line and then failing to pick up a first down on a fourth and one situation at the Warrior 14 yard line on their second offensive series.
But a good defensive play by Paul Fichtelman with a tackle for a seven yard loss set up the game's first score as PHS forced a Riverside punt from their own eight yard line and the Big Reds were able to start just 37 yards away from the goal line. Five plays later, on the first play of the second quarter, Hamilton went over left tackle for the final six yards and a 6-0 lead.
Riverside answered with an 88 yard kickoff return by Travis Wong for a touchdown and went up 7-6 on Derek Chestnut's extra point kick.
Another PHS special team mistake set up the next score as the Warriors blocked a Big Red punt attempt and the Warriors took over on the 22 yard line. But the PHS defense stiffened and Riverside had to settle for a 30 yard field goal by Chestnut to lead 10-6.
Ash then took over to give PHS back the lead as he scored on a one yard keeper that was set up by a 42 yard pass to Bell.
The teams then traded turnovers as Austin Alatore recovered a Riverside fumble on the 26 yard line but Ash tried to capitalize in a hurry by throwing toward the end zone only to have it intercepted at the two yard line. Adrian Webster then returned the favor by picking off a Riverside pass on the Warrior 39 yard line.
After two incomplete passes, Ash ran for 10 yards and then threw into the corner of the end zone to Jackson for the final 29 yards to make the score 18-10 in favor of the visitors from Wood County.
Twenty seconds later the score was tied again as Chris Bennett returned the ensuing kickoff 86 yards for a touchdown and the Warriors executed a halfback pass for the two-point conversion to tie the game with just 17 seconds left before intermission.
Webster and Chase Evans made big defensive plays on the first Riverside offensive try of the second half and gave PHS the ball back on their 41 after a punt. Hamilton accounted for 35 yards on the ground and another nine through the air to set up the fourth PHS touchdown - a pass from Ash to Bell from five yards away which gave the Big Reds the lead for good.
The lead went to 30-18 early in the fourth quarter as Ash found Taylor for a 20 yard pickup on a third and seven play before hitting Jackson on a 35 yard scoring pass with 10:42 left in the game.
Taylor followed that with an interception and 20 yard return to the Riverside 14 yard line. On the first play, Skyler Terrell burst up the middle for 12 yards but three more plays gained nothing and on fourth down Ash rolled out and hit Bell in the end zone for the touchdown. Kyle Foster's kick made it 37-18 with just 7:24 remaining.
Riverside got on the board just two and a half minutes later thanks to a 52 yard pass from Zach Pettry to Davon Booker. That play set up a 30 yard pass to Booker for the touchdown with 4:48 to play.
Although PHS fumbled the ball away for the second time in the game with 1:16 to go, Tyler Foster had a big quarterback sack and Nic Sandy secured the win with an interception with one second remaining.
