Switzer's 7 TDs Power GW Over Big Reds
Ryan Switzer scored seven touchdowns and ran for 334 yards to lead the undefeated George Washington Patriots to a 56-12 triumph over Parkersburg in a meeting of top five ranked teams at Stadium Field.
Switzer scored on runs of 28, 65, 3, 55, 75 and 35 yards while also returning a punt 55 yards for another touchdown as he put on a show that exceeded his already gaudy reputation as the state’s best player. He carried the ball 20 times for 334 yards and caught a pass for another 20 yards. He even recovered his own onside kickoff.
The victory gives the third-ranked Pats their 10th win while dropping fifth-rated PHS to 7-3 on the year. The playoffs await both teams next weekend PHS finished ninth in the ratings and will travel to Huntington for a rematch with the Highlanders, one of three teams to defeat the Big Reds this year. Big Red head coach Don Reeves decided to play on Friday night.
Dustin Crouser had the other GW touchdown – on an 86 yard run by the 230 pound fullback. The Patriots finished with 560 yards in total offense with 499 of that coming on the ground.
PHS got touchdowns from Jeremy Bell, his record-tying 10th scoring reception of the season, and Adam Lindamood. Bell tied Todd Curkendall’s regular season record set in 1978 and now stands just one away from the all-time mark of 11 touchdown receptions set in 1998 by Mike Lerch. However, the senior end did set a single-season record for receptions as his five catches (for 103 yards) gave him 46 catches on the year, three more than Curkendall had in his record-setting season. His reception yardage total for the year of 725 ranks him sixth all-time.
Lindamood finished with 110 yards on 21 carries while quarterback Alex Ash completed 13 of 28 passes for 203 yards with one interception. Ash was sacked five times.
The Patriots took advantage of a PHS mistake to score the game’s first touchdown when Crouser recovered a fumbled snap on the PHS 35 yard line with just 68 seconds gone in the game. Four plays later on a fourth-and-three play, Switzer took a pitch left, cut back and went 28 yards for the touchdown with 8:56 left in the first quarter.
The Big Reds drove 64 yards on the ensuing possession with the big play being a 35 yard reception by Matt Santer from Alex Ash. But a holding penalty put the ball back on the 25 yard line and after an incomplete pass, Cody Roney tried a 42 yard field goal that was short with 5:12 left on the clock.
After a relatively quick remainder to the first quarter, fireworks really went off in the second period. Zachary Clay had an interception just 51 seconds into the period and two plays later Switzer took off to his left, turned the corner and easily won the foot race to the end zone to complete a 65 yard TD run with 10:22 on the clock.
A personal foul penalty on PHS gave GW the ball on the Big Red 45 for the ensuing kickoff and Switzer not only kicked off but recovered his onside kick to put the ball on the PHS 32. Three plays later Switzer went over left tackle for the final three yards to the end zone with 9:33 to play.
PHS was forced to punt and GW started its next possession on the Big Red yard line. This time Crouser, line up as the fullback, took the handoff straight up the middle and went 86 yards untouched for another six points.
The big play syndrome continue with 1:12 left in the half when Switzer picked up a bouncing punt on his 49 yard line and went up the left sideline for another touchdown. The extra point kick made it 35-0.
PHS finally got on the board on the next offensive play following a 35 yard kickoff return by Skyler Terrell. From the 50, Ash found Jeremy Bell over the middle and Bell out-leaped Clay in a battle of 6-foot-5 players and then raced in for the touchdown. After Roney’s first kick was good, a penalty moved the ball back five yards and this time the kick was wide right with 54.1 seconds remaining before intermission. That made the score 35-6.
The third quarter was more of the same for GW as Switzer broke loose on a 55 yard scoring run on just the fourth play of the half to make it 42-6 after the PAT.
In the middle of that period PHS put together an 11-play, 80 yard drive that was mostly through the air with Ash finding Bell three times for 41 of the yards. Lindamood reached the end zone on a 17 yard run that saw him leap over one would-be tackler to score with 58.9 seconds left in the quarter.
Trailing 41-12, the Big Reds’ Huntar Shank recovered a fumble on the ensuing kickoff and Lindamood broke off a 10 yard run on the second play but a holding penalty and a sack ended the high hopes of getting anything out of that possession.
Switzer then took just one play to go 75 yards and the speedy junior tacked on another score on a 35 yard run with 5:32 left in the game.
