South Charleston Playoffs
SC Runs It Up Against Big Reds
Parkersburg's Big Reds ran into a buzzsaw here Saturday afternoon as the two-time defending state champion South Charleston Black Eagles ran up the score in posting a 62-7 victory.
For whatever the reason, South Charleston coach John Messinger decided to leave his starters in the entire game with Kennedy Award winner Tyler Harris throwing a touchdown pass to record-setting receiver Moe Mekhene with just two minutes left in the game for the final touchdown.
The Black Eagles handed PHS its worst loss in history and rolled up 634 yards in total offense with 30 first downs. The SC team had 273 yards on the ground and 361 yards through the air while scoring the most points ever in 100-plus years against a PHS team (breaking the record of 56 points set in 2003 by Nitro). The point spread was also the most ever for PHS in a losing effort, better the 49-0 victory posted by Stonewall Jackson in 1971.
The victory was the ninth in a row for South Charleston, whose only loss came against undefeated and top-ranked George Washington by a 21-7 score back in week two. The Eagles will now host Hurricane in the playoff quarterfinals next weekend.
Harris finished with 92 yards rushing and two touchdowns while completing 25 of 30 passes for four touchdowns. Mekhene caught a playoff record 17 passes for 213 yards and two touchdowns. Most of his receptions were little flair passes in the flat.
The Eagles scored twice in the first period on runs by Harris and Ray Coleman, then tacked on three touchdowns in the second period. Harris found Mekhene and Emerson Gagnone with six yard TD tosses and then let Trevand Reese run one in from six yards out. In the third quarter Gagnone caught a 43 yard touchdown from Harris, who also scored on a 10 yard run in that period. After the Big Reds' only score came just 33 seconds into the fourth quarter, South Charleston added a touchdown on a seven yard run by Reese and Harris' 16 yard pass to Mekhene with 2:07 left in the game, which lasted two hours and 47 minutes before a crowd of just over 1,200.
PHS, which finished 6-5, managed just 39 net yards rushing and 180 yards passing as Alex Ash completed just 12 of 32 with one interception and one touchdown. All-state halfback Allan Wasonga, who came into the game with 1,006 yards rushing in eight games, was held to 39 yards on 15 carries. Including quarterback sacks (of which there three), PHS wound with 50 yards in losses on the ground.
The only score for PHS came with 11:27 left in the game when Kevin Minehart caught a 34 yard pass from Ash. Minehart was returning to the lineup after missing five games with a broken hand.
One of the few bright spots on defense for PHS was sophomore Adam Lindamood who had nine solo and five assisted tackles for 14 total including one for a loss and also blocked an extra point. Gagnone led the South Charleston defense with seven tackles, two sacks and one pass batted down at the line of scrimmage.
