PHS Explodes In Third Period On Way To 48-7 Win Over South

After a bit of a slow start, Parkersburg exploded for 27 points in the third quarter to leave no doubt as the Big Reds ripped visiting Parkersburg South 48-7.

Chad Collins, who was named Most Valuable Player of the Great American Rivalry Series game, and Jeremy Bell each scored a pair of touchdowns while Allan Wasonga ran for 133 yards and one TD on just 10 carries to power the 455 yard offensive eruption by the Big Reds, who raised their record to 4-3 and should improve their number 16 state ranking.

While the offensive outburst was not unexpected, a defensive showing which limited South to just 113 yards and one touchdown was a bit of a surprise. It was a total team effort on the prevent side as Frank Settle made his presence felt as a new down lineman and was joined by end John Weber, and linebackers Corey Ohse and Huntar Shank to thwart the Patriots offense. The Big Reds came up with three turnovers and recorded six sacks (two each by Josh Lewis and Michael Talbott).

The victory ended South's two game winning streak against PHS and meant that the Patriots have still never beaten PHS more than two years in a row. It also gives the Big Reds a 33-11 record in the series.

While Wasonga picked up his yards early, leaving the contest in the middle of the third quarter with a leg/ankle injury, Collins contributed 80 yards on seven carries and Reserves Adam Lindamood (9-31) and Skyler Terrell (5-51) also helped on the ground as PHS had 324 yards on the night.

In the air Alex Ash was 10 of 13 for 131 yards with no interceptions. Bell caught three passes for 65 yards, including an incredible deflection reception that was reminiscent of Franco Harris' "Immaculate Reception" for the Pittsburgh Steelers.

South finished with just 38 net yards on the ground (thanks partly to 38 yards lost on sacks and four other tackles for losses totaling 19 yards). In the air Tyler Bolen was just eight of 20 for 75 yards with one interception. Braxton Johnson had three receptions for 25 yards while Jeff Kidder was the leading rusher with 44 yards on seven carries. Defensively Kidder and Johnson each had seven stops while Beau Bertus led the way with nine tackles. Johnson also had an interception and 67 yard return.

Neither team could product much offense in the first quarter - in fact PHS ran just six offensive plays. But the last three of those plays came at the end of the quarter and were runs of 10, 17 and 12 yards by Wasonga. A facemask penalty against South on the last play of the first quarter advanced the ball to the Patriot 21 yard line and set the stage for three receptions to produce the touchdown with 10:15 left in the half. Ash found Bell along the back line of the end zone and the 6-5 end out leaped two Patriot defenders to come down with the ball and six points. Jeff Lantz then kicked the first of six extra points.

It looked like that would be the only score of the first half as defenses on both sides were playing well. But with 23.6 seconds left on the clock, Bolen fumbled the snap and Weber recovered on the PHS 35. On the first play Ash hit John Thurmond, who then danced his way to the 45 only to fumble with Jake Gold recovering for the Big Reds on their 49.

Ash went to the air again, looking for Matt Santer over the middle. Santer could only get a hand on the ball but when it came down, Bell was there was grab it and race the final 20 yards to complete the 51 yard deflection-reception touchdown with just 9.3 seconds remaining in the half. Lantz converted the kick to make it 14-0.

PHS held South to 60 total yards with only 15 on the ground. The Patriots did, however, hold a huge 15::01 to 8:59 margin in time of possession.

The third quarter fireworks took just 57 seconds to begin as Wasonga broke loose for a 67 yard touchdown run on the second play from scrimmage. Taking the ball over the right side, he broke out and stiff-armed the last would-be tackler on his way to the end zone.

South got on the board following that quick score as the Patriots put together a 10 play, 74 yard drive that ended with Bolen hitting Johnson in the end zone from seven yards out when the Big Red defender fell down. That came with 6:32 left in the third period but only served to arouse the ire of the Big Reds.

Three plays later Wasonga picked up 11 yards on a carry but left the field which what appeared to be a leg or ankle injury. His replacement, Collins, immediately went up the middle, broke to his left and sped 57 yards for a touchdown with 4:58 remaining in the quarter.

Again three plays later Collins reached the end zone again - this time on the defensive side of the ball. He hit South's Jordan Quiocho six yards behind the line, who fumbled and the Big Red junior alertly picked up the ball and scampered 40 yards to paydirt for his second TD in the span of just 1:22.

PHS got the ball back with 2:31 left in the third quarter on the South 39 yard line and it took just five plays to register the fourth touchdown of the period. Ash hit Thurmond with a 15 yard reception but the PHS quarterback left the game with leg cramps and Santer came on to run the team. After three rushes by Collins carried the ball to the 11, Santer ran it into the end zone with 31.3 seconds remaining.

The fourth quarter saw the PHS second team offense on the field and Marcus Brown's seven yard run capped a nine play, 70 yard drive that was sparked by the running of Terrell. Terrell had a 38 yard run on the drive.
