Ash Sets Record With 5 TD Passes as PHS Outlasts CM, 53-35
In over 100 years of Parkersburg High School football no quarterback has ever thrown five touchdown passes in a single game - until now.
Junior Alex Ash passed for five touchdowns - to five different receivers - and 305 yards as he led the Big Reds to a 53-35 victory over visiting Cabell Midland in a wild homecoming game at Stadium Field.
While Ash was completing 20 of 25 passes to six different players, Allan Wasonga was scoring three touchdowns and Seth Frederick two to help power PHS to 484 yards in total offense against the Knights. Wasonga finished with 89 yards on just 14 carries while Chad Collins added 57 on eight attempts. Matt Santer caught six passes. Austin Shull of Cabell ran for 108 yards on 15 attempts.
Cabell Midland kept the game interesting with five touchdowns of its own, including two kickoff returns by Jacob Reynolds. The Knights had 318 yards in total offense, 211 through the air on the arm of Stephen Hamer.
Each team had five turnovers, Cabell suffering four interceptions (two by Frederick) while PHS lost four of five fumbles.
While the two teams combined for 802 yards in total offense it appeared for a half that it would be much, much more. The halftime score was PHS 40, Cabell Midland 28 and the two teams had 433 yards in offense (293 by PHS, 221 of it through the air). It took an actual one hour and 25 minutes to play the first 24 minutes of the game. Overall, the contest lasted two hours and 42 minutes.
The game was just over 90 seconds old when Frederick came up with an interception and 35 yard return to the Cabell eight yard line. On the first play, PHS produced a touchdown as Ash found 6-foot-4 end Jeremy Bell in the right flat for an eight yard touchdown completion with 10:30 still showing on the first quarter clock.
Cabell went ahead 7-6 with 3:58 remaining in the first period on a 27 yard run by Shull and Chris Molina's extra point kick but in just four plays PHS had regained the upper had thanks to a 38 yard scoring pass to Frederick, who ran a curl pattern, caught the ball and out-raced the secondary to the flag. The TD at the 3:03 mark was set up by a 31 yard run by Collins.
That was followed by Reynolds' 91 yard run up the right hash mark on the ensuing kickoff and the extra point was good for a 14-13 Cabell lead with 2:50 left in the quarter.
Ash went to the air six straight times to put the Big Reds back on top, taking his team 66 yards in six plays with just one incomplete pass. The TD came on a 12 yard throw over the middle to Wasonga with 1:47 on the clock.
PHS made it 26-14 on the second play of the second quarter. A 13 yard punt return to the CM 35 yard line by Collins was followed by a 25 yard completion to Corey Ohse. Then Wasonga scored on the next play on a draw play as Frederick threw the final clearing block.
But Reynolds repeated his earlier kickoff return antics for another touchdown as the 11:10 mark and the Knights trailed just 26-21.
The teams exchanged fumbles with PHS taking over on the Cabell 25 as Luca ScottoDiluzio came up with the ball with 9:12 remaining in the half. Ash found Frederick for 13 yards and then handed to Wasonga who raced in from the 12 with 8:49 on the clock. Jeff Lantz kicked the extra point to make it 33-21.
But the fireworks were far from over. Cabell scored in just four plays (thanks in part to a 15 yard penalty on PHS on a 13 yard pass completion to Tyler Sansom. The same combination of Hamer to Sansom hooked up for a touchdown on the next play as Big Red defenders missed no less than three tackles on the play that covered 34 yards and cut the lead to 33-28 with 7:48 left in the first half.
After PHS suffered an interception, Cabell Midland returned the favor but Frederick took his theft 75 yards up the left sidelines and into the end zone for a touchdown with 6:15 remaining to push the lead to 40-28.
It looked like the visitors would put another touchdown on the board just before the half after recovering a fumble at midfield. On the first play Hamer and Sansom combined for a 37 yard completion as the CM end ran out of two tackles and appeared headed for a touchdown before Josh Lewis chased him down from behind. But the PHS defense rose to the challenge this time as Collins, Frederick and Bell made big plays to set the stage for a fourth down and one yard to go attempt from the PHS three yard line. Shull tried the middle but ScottoDiluzio broke throw to stop him at the line of scrimmage and give the Big Reds the ball on downs at that spot with 1:08 remaining in the half.
Although the second half started out like it would be a continuation of the offensive outburst of the first half, things did finally settle down.
Frederick started the second half with a 37 yard kickoff return to the Cabell 47 and four plays later PHS had its seventh touchdown. Ash found Ohse diving in the right corner of the end zone from 14 yards away with 10:27 left in the third quarter. The kick by Lantz made it 47-28.
Cabell answered with an 80 yard drive that took just two and a half minutes. Shull went up the middle for the final 12 yards and the kick cut the lead to 47-35.
The Big Reds appeared to be in trouble late in the third quarter when they were pinned on their own two yard line following a 53 yard punt. But Wasonga took his team out of the hole with four straight carries for 36 yards and Collins got the touchdown on a 53 yard shovel pass play with just 11 seconds gone in the fourth quarter.
That would be the end of the scoreboard changes as PHS came up with two more interceptions - by Ohse and Collins - and the PHS offense became more conservative and reserves played the final four minutes for the Big Reds.
From 1932 through 2004 there had been 11 times that a Big Red quarterback had thrown four touchdown passes in a game, the last being Chance Litton, who did it twice in 2004. Newest PHS Football Hall of Famer Marc Kimes, who did it in 2000 and 2001, was in the stands watching Ash's effort. The first to throw for four TD's in a game was Leonard "Feets" Barnum in 1932.
Ash now had 13 TD passes on the year, tying him for seventh best in history. The record is 27 touchdowns by Litton. His total yardage through the air so far this year is 1,321 (eighth best ever). The 305 yards against Cabell Midland is the second best single game effort for a PHS quarterback.
At halftime, Josh Minardi and Lexi Miller were crowned Homecoming King and Queen.
