Big Reds Hammer Highlanders 51-21

Parkersburg's high-powered offense put over 500 yards and 51 points on the board to defeat visiting Huntington in its first home game of the season.

The 51-21 victory, achieved in large part to the offensive heroics of Chad Collins, Allan Wasonga, Alex Ash and Kevin Minehart, enabled the Big Reds to even their season's record at 2-2 going into next week's game at Beckley Woodrow Wilson. The home team outscored Huntington 34-7 in the second half.

PHS piled up 505 yards on 54 plays as three different players reached the end zone twice -Wasonga, Collins and Minehart. With Collins and Wasonga each rushing for over 100 yards and Ash passing for 175 yards the Big Reds had their offense in high gear. Collins had 135 yards on just nine carries (one an 84 yard touchdown run) while Wasonga had 128 yards on 17 attempts. Ash completed 12 of 20 passes and found Minehart for scoring connections twice. Six different receivers caught passes with Jeremy Bell leading the way with four catches for 76 yards. The Big Reds finished with 324 yards on the ground.

And they needed to put up those impressive numbers on offense because Huntington showed its speed by rolling up 438 yards in total offense but lost four fumbles. The Highlanders had 385 yards on the ground with quarterback Kyle Hutchison running for 142 yards on 12 attempts and scored one TD. But in the air Hutchison was only two of 10 for 53 yards.

The Big Reds started the explosive night by going 61 yards on just six plays as Wasonga did the scoring honors on a nine yard run in which he started up the middle, hesitated and then side-stepped his way into the end zone with just 1:56 elapsed in the game. The big play on that series was a 26 yard completion over the middle to Bell.

Huntington moved the ball from its 23 to the PHS 24 but ran out of downs on two straight incomplete passes.

PHS gained nine yards to the 33 on three plays and then gambled on fourth-and-one by having Tyler Gherke try to run for the needed yard from punt formation and he was hit for a two yard loss.

The Highlanders took advantage of getting the ball just 32 yards from the PHS end zone by scoring the tying touchdown in just four plays. The TD came on a seven yard run up the middle by Johnny Eastom.

It took the Big Reds just four plays to go back on top as Wasonga picked up nine before Ash found Bell for 13 yards after a scramble and then Seth Frederick picked up 19 more on another pass. Wasonga got his second TD from 24 yards out as he was hit, spun and then bounced outside to win a foot race to the end zone with 11:50 left in the second quarter.

Huntington kept up the scoring pace by taking only four plays to cover 80 yards on runs of 21, 18, 13 and 28 yards. The TD run came on an option keep by Hutchison with 10:35 remaining in the first half.

The pace slowed for the rest of the half as PHS missed a scoring chance when Jeff Lantz could not convert on a 29 yard field goal attempt that went wide left. But Lantz redeemed himself six minutes later with a successful 42 yard field goal that made it 17-14 with 2:17 on the clock.

Leading by only three at the intermission and having to kick off to Huntington to start the second half had PHS fans worried - and rightly so as the Highlanders again moved the ball down the field, going from their own 11 to the Big Red 28 before two passes misfired and PHS got the ball back on downs.

Collins ripped of gains of 19, nine, 13 and eight yards on successive carries and a 23 yard pass to Bell put the ball on the Huntington six yard line. Three plays later Collins followed the blocking of Wes O'Brien and Robert Kelley into the end zone from two yards out. Lantz kicked the extra point to make it 24-143 with 4:44 left in the third quarter.

A 50 yard run by Hutchison put the visitors deep in PHS territory at the 27 yard line but three plays later the Highlanders fumbled the ball away to Matt Santer and the Big Reds had the ball on their own 16.

Sixteen seconds later Collins was falling into the end zone to complete an 84 yard run on which he went over left guard, cut right and outran the last Huntington defender for the touchdown. The kick made it 31-14 with 2:18 left in the third quarter.

But just when there was some breathing room, Huntington exploded again as Rashaun Page returned the ensuing kickoff 97 yards for his second return touchdown of the year and the lead dwindled to 31-21 after the extra point kick.

Huntington then tried an onside kick which was recovered by Vince Ott on the PHS 46 yard line. Five plays later Ash hit Minehart in stride over the middle for a 31 yard scoring strike and a 37-21 lead on the first play of the fourth quarter.

The Highlanders proceeded to cough up the ball three more times in the final quarter to make things easy for PHS. Corey Ohse recovered a fumble on the 50 and runs of 23 and 14 yards by Wasonga helped move the ball inside the Huntington 10 yard line. After two unsuccessful tries by Wasonga, Ash found Minehart on the back line of the end zone for a four yard touchdown reception to make it 44-21 with 7:11 left in the game.

Just 25 seconds later the Big Reds has another touchdown as sophomore Tre Jackson picked up another Huntington fumble and raced 24 yards to paydirt. The kick made it 51-21 with 6:46 left to play.

The PHS second defensive unit came up with fumble number four as John Carter recovered on the PHS 42 yard line. Backup quarterback Matt Santer fumbled the snap on the second play from scrimmage but picked it up and ran 48 yards to the five yard line. But two plays later Santer tried for force a pass into the end zone and suffered an interception.

Santer, only a sophomore, had nine tackles to lead the PHS prevent until while Bell was in on eight stops.
