Mollett Runs For 4 Touchdowns As #2 GW Beats PHS 35-14

Felix Mollett ran for four touchdowns and 177 yards to power number two ranked and undefeated George Washington to a 35-14 win over #14 Parkersburg by a 35-14 score at Stadium Field.

Mollett broke away for TD runs of one, 38, 43 and 60 yards while quarterback Nick Britton threw for 243 yards and one touchdown as the Patriots ran their record to 6-0 while dropping PHS to 3-3. Britton completed 13 of 21 passes to six different receivers and found Eric Aluise for an 18 yard toss into the end zone. As a team GW piled up 421 yards in total offense while "holding" PHS to 266 yards.

The Big Reds scored first on an Allan Wasonga two yard run in the first quarter but could not score again until the final two minutes on a 20 yard run by Adam Lindamood. Wasonga finished with 82 yards on 19 carries while quarterback Alex Ash completed 11 of 19 passes for 116 yards but was intercepted twice, one leading to a GW score.

PHS played well in the first quarter, both offensively and defensively.

After suffering an interception on the third play of the game, the PHS prevent unit rose to the occasion and forced GW to punt after three plays netted minus one yard. The Big Reds picked up a first down on a leaping 23 yard reception by Jeremy Bell but a holding penalty thwarted that drive and Tyler Gherke got off a 37 yard punt that was downed on the GW five yard line.

PHS was penalized nine times for 80 yards on the night while GW was flagged six times for 52 yards.

Starting from its own five, GW tried a wrap-around handoff to Mollett in its own end zone. John Weber sniffed the play out and forced a fumble which Huntar Shank recovered on the two yard line.

On the next play Wasonga followed the blocking of Justin Johnson into the end zone over the right side and PHS was on the board first with 5:52 on the clock. Jeff Lantz kicked the extra point to make it 7-0.

The Big Red defense forced another GW punt and the offense was on the move again as the quarter ended following a 31 yard catch and run by Corey Ohse and a 17 yard sprint around left end by Wasonga that put the ball on the GW 30 yard line.

Wasonga picked up another first down to the 15 yard line on a nine yard run and Chad Collins picked up two more to the 13 on first down. But a penalty pushed PHS back to the 22 and three plays later Lantz came on to attempt a 33 yard field goal. The kick appeared good from the sideline but was ruled wide and PHS took over on the 20 with 8:49 left in the first half.

Those last eight minutes of the first half were a nightmare for PHS as the visitors scored quickly on three straight possessions while the Big Reds suffered an interception, three penalties and could not make another first down.

The first GW score came when Mollett took the handoff on a third-and-one situation from his own 40, went over right tackle, stepped out of a tackle and broke into the open from where raced into the end zone with 7:12 on the clock.

An interception on the GW 45 set up the second score which came after passes of 14 yards to Mollett and 22 yards to Ryan Switzer. The TD was an 18 yard catch in the end zone by Eric Aluise between three PHS defenders with 3:32 left in the half.

Forced to punt from their own 12, the Big Reds gave GW good field position at midfield with 1:24 on the clock and Britton immediately found Switzer for 21 yards. On another third and short situation from the PHS 23, Mollett again went up the middle for a gain of 10. Then came a nine yard completion to Christopher Stone and a three yard run by Mollett to the one yard line with 12 seconds left. On the next play Mollett followed huge (6-foot-6, 275 pound) senior tackle Brian Pearson into the end zone with just 9.3 seconds on the clock. Will Gravely's straight-on style extra point kick made it 21-7 at the half.

The Patriots kept the offensive fireworks going to begin the second half as they took just three plays to reach the end zone after receiving the kickoff. A 42 yard pass to Aluise was followed by a 38 yard sprint by Mollett and the scoreboard read 28-7 with just 58 seconds gone in the second half.

Things calmed down until the second play of the fourth quarter when Mollett broke loose again, this time going to the outside for a 43 yard TD run with 11:19 left in the game.

PHS finally reached the end zone again with 1:50 remaining when Lindamood ran left, cut back to his right and scored from 20 yards out. An 11 yard run by Wasonga and pass completions of 10 and 12 yards to Ohse and Bell were the big plays on the eight play, 73 yard drive.

Ohse caught four passes for 51 yards on the night while Aluise had five receptions for 89 yards for GW. Matt Santer had nine tackles for PHS while Ohse and Weber collected eight stops each. Luca ScottoDiluzio and Chad Collins each had seven tackles for the Big Reds. Linebacker Dustin Rouser paced GW with eight stops.
