Keion Wright Keys Capital To 34-7 Win
The offensive showdown between the Big Reds and the Cougars turned into a one man show put on by Keion Wright of Capital.
Wright ran for four touchdowns and 272 yards on just 19 attempts to carry Capital to a 34-7 victory before a sparse Senior Night crowd at Stadium Field.
The loss ends the PHS regular season at 6-4 and the Big Reds now must wait to see where they will travel to in the first round of the playoffs in two weeks. The expected opponent could be Martinsburg or Morgantown.
Capital, which came into the game ranked eighth in the state, will improve to 7-2 with a home game left against Huntington.
With Wright leading the way the Cougars cruised to 440 yards in total offense - all but one of those yards coming on the ground. That, coupled with Parkersburg's poor passing night and two turnovers, turned the game into a one-sided affair. Big Red quarterback Alex Ash, who came into the contest completing over 65 percent of his passes, connected on just nine of 22 tosses for 113 yards with one interception and one touchdown. The PHS receivers did not help Ash with multiple dropped passes. On the ground, Allen Wasonga was held to 56 yards on 11 carries while sophomore Adam Lindamood came on at the end of the game to gain 57 yards on 10 attempts and become his team's top rusher.
The only Big Red touchdown came with 4:44 left in the fourth quarter when Matt Santer got behind the Capital secondary and caught a 24 yard pass from Ash. That play was set up by five runs from Lindamood for 42 yards on the 69 yard, seven play drive.
Capital scored on its first possession of the game, going 70 yards on 11 plays with all but one coming on the ground. Wright got the touchdown on back-to-back 15 yard runs with 4:46 left in the first period. The Cougars scored gain with 8:42 left in the first half when Wright burst up the middle and went 44 yards for the touchdown.
On the next series, PHS was back up on its own 25 after Ash was sacked by John Morrison for a 12 yard loss. Tyler Gherke's punt was blocked by Tyler McClaskie, who picked it up and ran the final four yards into the end zone to make it 21-0 with 6:29 on the clock.
The Big Reds threatened just before the half thanks to two 15-yard personal foul penalties on Capital. But on second and goal from the Cougar six yard line and only 13 seconds left before the break, Ash tried to hit Corey Ohse deep in the end zone only to have the pass picked off by Myles Duiguid.
In the second half it took just four plays for Wright to break another long touchdown run, this one covering 54 yards and coming with 9:54 on the third period clock. Jeremy Bell blocked the extra point kick but Capital had a 27-0 lead.
PHS had just four possessions in the second half, the last beginning with just 47 seconds left in the contest.
