 Big Reds Prove They Can Win In Mud, 14-6, Over Cabell Midland

ONA - The Big Reds proved they can win in the mud - and kept their playoff hopes alive in the process - with a 14-6 victory over Cabell Midland.

For the second week in a row the Big Reds played under horrible field conditions as the Knights' Stadium turf was ankle deep mud virtually from goal line to goal line and hash mark to hash mark. But unlike last week the Big Reds took care of the ball and cut down on their penalties to post their fourth win in eight outings and end a two-game losing streak. The loss dropped Cabell Midland to 3-4 on the year.

Allan Wasonga scored both touchdowns in the defensive struggle, one in the first quarter and one in the fourth quarter. He rushed 31 times for 121 yards and would have easily gone over 200 yards again but had a 62 yard touchdown run and another 47 yard run to the three yard line called back by penalties. The junior halfback showed he is more than just a speed back by running over Cabell Midland defenders on several of his carries.

But on the bright side, PHS had only four penalties in the game and suffered no turnovers while getting two turnovers from the home team.

Defensively, PHS held the Knights to 83 yards rushing and 67 yards passing as veteran quarterback Mike Brumfield was able to complete only seven of 17 passes, suffering one interception and lost one fumble. The interception came at the hands of Stephen Roush (his fifth pickoff of the season). Sonny Zickefoose was the unofficial leader of the defense with eight tackles and a quarterback sack. Zach Stanley and John Weber also were among the tackle leaders for the Big Reds.

Each team used just three ball carriers while Parkersburg's only pass completion of the night went from Derek Wenzel to Roush for 44 yards and set up the game's first touchdown.

The Big Reds started their second possession of the game from their own 40 yard line and after three runs by Wasonga, Wenzel threw a bomb to Roush, who caught the ball inside the Cabell 20 yard line and made it all the way to the three yard line before falling in the mud. On the next play Wasonga powered over right guard for the touchdown with 6:10 on the clock. Chad Collins then kicked the all-important extra point for a 7-0 lead.

Responding with a ground game drive of its own, Cabell Midland drove 62 yards on the ensuing possession for its only touchdown of the night. Three times the Knights came up with big third down plays to keep the drive alive (once thanks to a facemask penalty). Moving to a first and goal on the four yard line, the Big Red defense stiffened with Roush, Ben Clark, Collins, Stanley and Zach Hendershot making big plays to force a fourth down at the one yard line. But from there Brumfield, a 6-foot-2, 215 pound Tim Tebow look-alike, scored on a quarterback sneak with 10:29 left in the half. The Knights faked the extra point kick and Brumfield tried unsuccessfully to pass for the two-point conversion, leaving PHS with a one point lead.

On the second play from scrimmage following the CM touchdown, Wasonga broke free and at times resembled a mud surfer as he seemed to glide over the sloppy surface. He went 62 yards for the touchdown but the Big Reds were flagged for a false start and the play was nullified. The Big Reds had to punt three plays later.

The second half saw PHS maintain good field position and play good defense. Back-to-back plays by Zickefoose, Stanley, Ryan Black and Justin Johnson thwarted one Cabell drive while the Big Reds started their first two series of the second half from the 50 and the PHS 35 yard line.

On the second possession, Wasonga burst away for a 47 yard run to the Knights' three yard line only to have that run called back by an illegal procedure penalty. The Big Reds still drove to the Cabell 15 yard line but misfired on a fourth down pass.

Chad Collins recovered a Brumfield fumble at the 18 yard line one play later but the Big Reds couldn't capitalize as Wasonga was stopped for a yard loss on a fourth and one play at the eight.

Cabell returned the favor by turning it over on downs at the 17 with 2:50 left to play and it took Wasonga two tries to reach the end zone with 2:15 on the clock. Collins' kick made it 14-6 and two plays later Roush came up with his interception at the Big Red 36 yard line with 1:41 remaining. The Big Reds picked up one first down and ran out the clock.
