South Charleston 2009
Fumbles, Poor Second Half Play Costly as SC Beats Big Reds, 45-24
Against the defending state champions and a team with 18 straight wins, one mistake is usually too many.
Unfortunately, the Big Reds made four mistakes - losing four fumbles - and that plus an overall second half collapse proved costly as PHS blew a 24-16 halftime lead en route to a 45-24 setback at the hands of the visiting South Charleston Black Eagles.
The Black Eagles scored four times in the second half with four different players doing the honors as they handed the Big Reds their second loss in three games. South Charleston has now won 19 games in a row dating back to the end of the 2007 season.
Raymond Coleman led the way for the winners with 200 yards rushing while quarterback Tyler Harris ran for two touchdowns and 62 yards and passed for 101 more. As a team South Charleston had 20 first downs, 338 yards rushing and 101 through the air for a total of 439 yards on 62 plays. They had no turnovers.
PHS got another big game from junior Allan Wasonga, who rushed 24 times for 182 yards and two touchdowns. He also had a 47 yard kickoff return among his three kick runbacks for 87 yards. Wasonga, who came into the game as the seventh-leading rusher in the nation, now has 669 yards rushing in three games.
The Big Reds started like gangbusters, taking the opening kickoff and driving 65 yards in 10 plays with Wasonga going over from a yard away behind a great block from Ryan Black with 7:51 on the first period clock. Jeff Lantz kicked the first of his three extra points.
Although South Charleston got a 48 yard run from Coleman on its first play from scrimmage, the PHS defense held and took over on downs at Big Red 27. From there PHS put together another scoring drive, this one taking 11 plays. Wasonga had runs of 14, 15 and 15 yards on the drive while Derek Wenzel had a 13 yard run along the way before rolling left and finding Sonny Zickefoose in the left corner of the end zone with a four yard scoring completion with 1:14 left in the first quarter.
A 43 yard run by Coleman followed on SC's second possession and this time they were able to convert on a two yard run by Harris with 10:14 left in the first half.
The first mistake of the night led to the Eagles' second score. Stephen Roush caught a pass from Wenzel and turned it into a 15 yard gain only to lose the ball near midfield. South Charleston immediately moved to the nine yard line before some big plays by sophomores John Weber and Chad Collins forced a field goal of 26 yards by Dakota Sanders which cut the lead to 14-10 with 6:26 on the clock.
The Big Reds answered that quickly, however, as Wenzel returned the ensuing kickoff 22 yards and got an extra 15 yards on a facemask penalty which put the ball at midfield. On the first play, Wasonga raced around right end for 50 yards and a touchdown to make it 21-10.
Although PHS forced SC to punt on its next possession the ball was downed on the Big Red two yard line and on the first play Wenzel fumbled into the end zone and Devante Craft recovered for the touchdown to cut the lead to 21-16.
A great kickoff return of 47 yards by Wasonga, who jumped over one would-be tackler at his own 40, gave Parkersburg great field position on the SC 39 with 3:24 left in the half. The offense was able to only advance the ball 11 yards but on fourth down with 19.2 seconds left, Lantz came on to drill a 45 yard field goal to make it 24-16 at the break.
The Black Eagles took the second half kickoff and scored in just six plays with a 31 yard run by Coleman setting up a nine yard run by Walter Obey. The two-point conversion run by Harris tied the game at 24-all with 9:23 on the clock.
A couple of costly penalties forced PHS to punt the ball away and SC kept up its momentum by going 69 yards on nine plays with Coleman getting the TD on a 16 yard run in which he made three Big Red tacklers miss. The kick made it 31-24 with 3:37 left in the third quarter.
The mistakes continued for PHS as Wasonga fumbled the kickoff return after a 25 yard run to the Parkersburg 42. A 38 yard run up the sideline by Harris to the one yard line led to his own quarterback sneak with 1:24 on the clock and the lead moved to 38-24.
The Big Reds tried a fake punt on the last play of the third quarter and turned the ball over on their own 43. Five plays later South Charleston made the home team pay with another touchdown, this one on a one yard run up the middle by Wayne Wurster.
Another lost fumble by PHS came with 6:54 left in the game on the SC 38 yard line and although they got the ball back on downs from the Eagles, the final Big Red offensive effort of the night was typical of their second half play as they were whistled for three penalties and had a bad snap punt travel just 11 yards.
