Big Reds Beat Warriors 42-0

That's two down - one to go.

In the Parkersburg Big Reds' bid to beat three straight higher-ranked opponents and earn a spot in the 2009 Class AAA playoffs.

PHS put on a dominating performance offensively and defensively against the 13th-ranked Warriors from Riverside as the Big Reds won 42-0 to raise their record to 5-4 going into next week's game at Charleston's Laidley Field against Capital. Riverside fell to 5-4 on the season.

With Allan Wasonga forced to sit out the first half, Derek Wenzel and Stephen Roush put on a show offensively while the Big Red defense pitched a shut out and allowed just one serious scoring threat.

Wenzel completed eight of 13 passes for 81 yards in the first half (seven of them to Roush) and showed his big play capability with a 75 yard touchdown run to help PHS ease out to a 14-0 halftime lead. Wenzel finished with 13 completions in 19 attempts for 162 yards and one touchdown while Roush ended the night with nine receptions for 101 yards. Roush also had two interceptions on defense (giving him seven on the year), returning one 56 yards for a touchdown.

Meanwhile, Wasonga had to sit for the game's first 24 minutes because of a school infraction and only played 14 minutes of the second half before taking a seat with the other PHS starters and a 35-point lead. The junior speedster broke loose for an 81 yard touchdown run on his first carry of the game and finished with three touchdowns, including a 24 yard scoring sprint on a screen pass reception early in the fourth quarter. Wasonga finished the game with eight rushes for 122 yards.

Defensively, PHS held Riverside to just eight first downs and only 167 yards in total offense. The Big Reds recorded five quarterback sacks and limited Warrior quarterback Seth Shanklin to just seven completions in 15 attempts for 101 yards while holding the visitors to only 66 yards on the ground. Unofficially, Roush had six tackles and two break-ups in addition to his two interceptions while Zach Hendershot and Corey Oshe were among the other leading defenders who pressured Shanklin all night as well as containing the Warriors' running game.

PHS kicker Jeff Lantz, returning from a one-game suspension, kicked all six extra points and put four of seven kickoffs into the end zone.

Riverside took the opening kickoff and moved to the Parkersburg 32 yard line thanks to a 32 yard completion to Jimmy Ruiz. But from there Shanklin was sacked by Oshe for a seven yard loss and then tried to go to the end zone only to have Roush there to make the pick-off.

The teams then traded punts with PHS beginning its second possession from its own 28. Fourteen plays later Ben Clark pounded into the end zone from two yards out to put his team ahead just 10 seconds into the second quarter. The big play was a fourth down 12 yard pass completion to Roush that moved the ball to the Riverside 24 yard line. Wenzel hit Roush four times for 43 yards on the drive.

With 3:46 left in the half, Parkersburg had to start from its own five yard line after a block-in-the-back penalty on a punt return. A late hit penalty against Riverside helped move the ball out to the 22 yard line and a short pass to Roush moved it to the 25. From there Wenzel took off on a quarterback keeper around the right side and turned on the speed. With only Warriors' Rayshawn Payne to beat for the touchdown, Wenzel disposed of that threat with a stiff-arm at the Riverside 40 yard line and coasted in to complete the 75 yard scoring journey with 2:11 on the clock.

In the final seconds of the half, Lantz tried to give PHS three more points with a 50-yard field goal attempt but while the kick was so straight that it hit the upright support in the middle of the field, it was about six feet short of clearing the crossbar.

The second half started with a nice kickoff return by Roush, that was called back by holding, forcing PHS to start from its own 19. That didn't matter to Wasonga, who had been anxiously waiting on the sidelines for his chance. The junior halfback took 14 seconds to cover the 81 yards, leaving defenders with little chance to catch him on his first touchdown run of the night.

The Big Reds scored on their next possession, going 67 yards on eight plays with Wasonga going the final 16 yards untouched thanks to pancake blocks by Ryan Black and Robert Kelley. That TD came with 7:15 on the clock in the third period and, after the PAT, ran the score to 28-0. Big plays on the drive were passes of 22 and 14 yards to Roush and Black respectively as well as a 12 yard run by Wenzel.

Five plays into the fourth quarter PHS made it 35-0 when Wasonga turned a screen pass over the middle into an easy 24 yard touchdown catch. That 50 yard drive was highlighted by a nice option play run by Wenzel and Wasonga that gained a total of 17 yards.

The final score came when Roush picked off a Shanklin pass on his own 44 and returned it up the right sideline all the way to the end zone with 7:24 left in the game.
