Big Reds Fall 35-14 to Patriots in Muddy Mess at Erickson
Playing at home on a field especially suited for their style of play, the Patriots of Parkersburg South handed the Parkersburg Big Reds a 35-14 setback on a muddy Erickson Field.
The Patriots played near perfect football to win their fourth straight game on a field which hampered the big play capabilities of PHS. South had no turnovers, ran 63 plays to just 31 for the Big Reds and kept the ball for 33 minutes and two seconds while allowing their visitors just 14:58 in time of possession. PHS was whistled for 12 penalties while South finished with just three (two of those coming in the final minute).
Hunter Ferguson ran for two touchdowns and 145 yards on a whopping 35 carries while Jeff Kidder had 125 yards on 17 carries. Michael Molinari also scored twice for South, once on a four yard run and once on a seven yard reception from Cody Swearingen. Swearingen scored the other touchdown on a one yard quarterback sneak.
Allan Wasonga was the lone bright spot offensively for PHS as he broke away for touchdown runs of 61 and 71 yards while finishing with 199 yards on just 17 carries. He had at least two other long runs called by penalties.
South finished with 308 yards rushing and seven yards passing while PHS had 219 yards rushing and 11 passing. The Patriots had a 23-7 edge in first downs with five of those coming because of Big Red penalties.
PHS forced South to punt four plays into the game and then picked up three first downs to move to the Patriot 35 yard line before a penalty and then a fumble turned the momentum around. South responded on its second play as Kidder broke loose for a 40 yard run to the Parkersburg 15 yard line. Two penalties against PHS moved the ball to the one, from where Ferguson took it in with 5:03 on the first quarter clock to cap a six-play 58 yard drive.
After a Big Red punt, South put together another scoring drive, going 49 yards on 11 running plays aided once again by a penalty against PHS. The Patriots scored on a fourth down play from the four when Molinari scampered around left end for the touchdown with 9:22 left in the half.
PHS, however, got on the board quickly following the ensuing kickoff. Starting from their own 30, the Big Reds picked up a first down but where flagged for holding, moving the ball back to the 39. But Wasonga broke one for the distance, running over the last South defender, with 7:08 on the clock and the teams appeared to be headed into the locker rooms at the half with a one touchdown margin.
Although Jeff Lantz put the kickoff into the end zone, forcing South to start from the 20, the Patriots put together a classic drive, running the ball 15 straight times to move the ball all the way to the seven yard line. Three times they came up with big third down plays to keep the drive alive. Kidder picked up nine on one run, Ferguson 14 on another and Molinari 13 on the final third down when they faced a third-and-10 situation. Swearingen got the TD when he lofted a pass into the corner of the end zone to Molinari with just 10.7 seconds left in the half to make it 21-7.
In the third quarter Tyler Gherke put South in a hole with a punt to the Patriots' eight yard line but on fourth and three and South lined up to punt, PHS was penalized for encroachment, giving South a first down. Two plays later the Big Reds were flagged for a personal foul and then unsportsmanlike conduct penalties back-to-back and that put the ball on the PHS 24 yard line and set up a one yard sneak for a touchdown by Swearingen with 3:10 left in the third quarter.
Less than a minute later PHS was back in the game as Wasonga broke over tackle and into the hope from his own 29 and did not stop until 71 yards later he was in the end zone with his 19th touchdown of the season. With 2:17 left in the third quarter the outcome was still in doubt at 28-14.
PHS forced South to punt and got the ball back on its 17 yard line. Four runs by Wasonga moved it to the 46 but then came a holding penalty and an intentional grounding flag that led to PHS being forced to punt again.
South then put together a 13-play, 65-yard scoring drive - all on ground (or make that mud). The TD came on an eight yard run by Ferguson with 1:11 left in the game.
