Wasonga Lives Up To Billing as PHS Beats Marietta 28-7 In 98th Meeting

The 6,000 plus fans on hand came expecting to see a basketball-like score but, instead, were treated to some strong defense as only Parkersburg's Allan Wasonga lived up to the pre-game hype.

In a meeting between two teams which put 102 points on the board last week, the defenses and the break-away runs by Wasonga were there for the fans in a 28-7 PHS victory. It was the 98th meeting between Ohio River PHS and Marietta.

Wasonga ran for 240 yards on just 17 carries and scored two touchdowns on plays covering 67 and 50 yards. Derek Wenzel added a touchdown run and completed his only pass of the game for a score to Sonny Zickefoose. Jeff Lantz added all four extra point kicks.

Marietta's only points came with just 2:40 left in the contest on a 44 yard pass from Matt McKitrick to Morgan Wynn against many of the PHS reserve defenders

The first half saw Marietta advance inside the PHS 20 yard line just one (to the 19) while the Big Red offense fared little better until Stephen Roush had a 39 yard punt return to the Marietta 28 yard line with just 43 seconds left in the second quarter. On the first play from scrimmage Wasonga broke loose for 24 yards to the four yard line. A fumbled handoff was recovered by Wasonga on the five yard line on the next play and with just 9.8 seconds left, Wenzel rolled left and found fellow co-captain Zickefoose in the end zone for the touchdown to make it 7-0 at the half.

Wasonga picked right up where he left off to being the second half as he went the distance (67 yards) up the middle on the first play from scrimmage to make it 14-0.

Roush then made another big play with an interception on his own 17 yard line and the Big Reds quickly moved the ball to midfield thanks to a personal foul penalty against Marietta on a late hit against Wasonga. From midfield, Wasonga took the handoff, started up the middle, broke outside and outran the defense for a 50 yard scoring play with 8:46 left in the third quarter.

A 45 yard run by Wasonga set up the third PHS touchdown in the third quarter. Wasonga's run to the Marietta 29 yard line was followed by another break in the Big Reds' favor as Chad Collins carried the ball to the 24, fumbled, but Roush was there to recover at the 18 yard line. On the next play Wenzel used a play fake and sprinted up field for the touchdown with 38 seconds left in the quarter to make it 28-0.

Marietta's second string scored against the PHS reserves with 3:16 remaining on a long pass and the Big Red second unit nearly responded, going 71 yards to the Marietta six yard line thanks to long runs by Daniel Shank (25 yards) and Collins (27 yards). But at that point the Big Reds took a knee to end the game rather than try for another touchdown.

Defensively, Jason Phillips led the way with 13 unofficial tackles.

The win was the 68th for PHS against 26 losses and four ties in the series with Marietta. Wasonga was named U.S. Marine Corps Greatest American Rivalry MVP of the game and at halftime Rick Phillips, former PHS all-stater, was inducted into the Rivalry Hall of Fame.
