Big Reds' Offense Hits High Gear With 63-24 Win Over Huntington

HUNTINGTON - Derek Wenzel and Stephen Roush had career high performances while Allan Wasonga played only a quarter and a half but still racked up huge numbers as the Big Reds' offense went into high gear here Friday night en route to a 63-24 victory over the Highlanders of Huntington.

Wenzel threw for 265 yards and three touchdowns with Roush scoring twice while catching nine passes for 225 yards. Meanwhile, Wasonga sat out the first half but still scored four touchdowns and ran for 235 yards on just 16 carries before going to the bench in the middle of the fourth quarter as PHS reserves came on to mop up the team's second win in four outings. It was also the 100th career coaching win for Bernie Buttrey.

In all, the Big Reds amassed an amazing 605 yards in total offense, 340 on the ground and 265 through the air, on just 53 plays for an average of 11.4 yards per play. Wenzel completed 11 of 17 passes. Chad Collins, who started at running back in place of Wasonga, had 64 yards on seven carries and scored once while Tyler Gibson caught a TD pass and Daniel Shank added an 11 yard scoring run.

Huntington totaled 342 yards in total offense on the night as the two teams amassed nearly 1,000 yards in offense. Huntington had 240 passing yards as quarterback Tyler Hutchison completed 20 of 33 passes for one touchdown. Hutchison also ran for a TD. The Highlanders added 212 yards on kickoff returns, including an 80 yard scoring return by Brandon Eubank (who caught five passes for 94 yards, including a 72 yard scoring reception just 1:13 into the game.

The Highlanders scored on just the third play of the game with Eubank caught a deep pass through two PHS defenders and went all the way to put his team on the board first.

But the Big Reds answered on their first offensive play of the game when Roush got behind the secondary and Wenzel hit him with a 71 yard bomb to knot the game at 7-all just 12 seconds after Huntington's score. Jeff Lantz kicked the first of his nine extra points on the night.

Showing a fine mixture of passing a running to start the game, the Big Reds also scored on their second possession, driving 88 yards on eight plays with sophomore Collins breaking away for a 36 yard scoring run set up by passes of 17 and 14 yards to Roush.

The two teams exchanged punts before Huntington put together an 11-play, 79 yard drive capped by Hutchison's one yard run and aided by personal foul penalty against PHS. Joe St. Clair kicked the extra point to make it 14-all with 10:02 left in the half.

The Big Reds took to the air in response to that score as Wenzel completed three passes to Roush for 41 yards, setting up a 36 yard completion to Tyler Gibson for the TD with 6:56 on the clock.

But Huntington was able to get back on the board with 14.8 seconds left before intermission as Hutchison passed his team from its own 38 yard line to the Parkersburg 14 before settling for St. Clair's 37 yard field goal.

Wasonga came on to play in the second half and he turned  his pent up energy loose for four touchdowns, seemingly one after the other. He carried four straight times to start the second half and quickly covered 44 yards to the end zone with 10:20 on the clock. The TD run came from 10 yards away.

After forcing a Huntington punt, PHS was back in business at its own 31. After an incomplete pass, Wasonga broke loose for a 69 yard scoring run with 7:45 on the clock. Lantz kicked the PAT to make it 35-17.

Although the Highlanders answered that with an 80 kickoff return touchdown by Eubank, that only served to get the PHS offense back on the field that much faster and it took the Big Reds just over two minutes to score again, this time on a 23 yard pass to Roush.

Roush then set up another PHS touchdown with a 36 yard reception, allowing Wasonga to reach the end zone from 10 yards away behind a great block from Ben Clark with 8.9 seconds left in the third quarter. That fourth touchdown of the period, and Lantz's kick, made it 49-24 going into the final quarter.

The Big Reds got the ball back with 9:08 left in the game and Wasonga broke off a 58 yard TD run. The speedy junior carried three more times later in the game before going to the bench with 6:36 remaining in the contest. The final score came on an 11 yard run by Shank.
