GW Rallies Past PHS 28-20
Despite Wasonga's 268 Yards
George Washington's Patriots rallied for two fourth quarter touchdowns to defeat the Parkersburg Big Reds 28-20 at Charleston's Laidley Field despite Allan Wasonga running for 268 yards and scoring two touchdowns.
After the Big Reds had taken a 20-14 lead on Wasonga's second TD of the night with 4:43 left in the third quarter, GW drove 68 yards in 13 plays to tie the game at 20-all on Felix Mollett's five yard run just four plays into the fourth quarter. Brad Adkins' kick made it 21-20 in favor of the Patriots.
PHS picked up a couple of first downs on its next possession but were forced to punt and Tyler Gherke could not get the kick off, fumbling the ball away to GW on the Big Reds' 29 yard line with 6:24 left in the contest. GW quickly moved to score in five plays on a one yard run by Mollett. The kick made it 28-20.
The Big Reds started their final possession on the 38 yard line and picked up one first down to midfield. After a three yard gain by Wasonga to the GW 47, PHS quarterback Derek Wenzel was sacked and fumbled the ball away at the 41 yard line with 1:30 on the clock. GW was able to pick up one first down and run the clock out to preserve its fourth win in six outings while dropping PHS to 3-3 on the season.
Wasonga finished the game with 268 yards rushing on 34 carries and had TD runs of 51 and 20 yards but he was virtually the only offense the Big Reds could muster as they had a total of 256 yards on the ground and 47 through the air as Wenzel completed five of nine passes.
GW got 111 yards rushing from Mollett on 23 carries while quarterback Nick Britton completed 11 of 20 passes for 160 yards and one touchdown (to Dustin Crouser). The Patriots also got a 57 yard touchdown from on an end-around by Shaquille Williams. GW finished with 353 yards in total offense but that included a loss of 46 yards on the final play of the game when Britton kept running backwards before taking a knee to run the clock out.
The Big Reds scored the first time they had the ball, putting together a seven play, 65-yard drive that was highlighted by a 16 yard run by Wenzel and a 19 yard pass from Wenzel to Ryan Black. The touchdown came when Wenzel followed the blocks of Chase Garrett and Zach Stanley into the end zone from one yard away with 6:41 on the first quarter clock.
PHS threatened to score on its second possession thanks to a 50 yard run by Wasonga. A 16 yard pass to Black helped move the ball to the three yard line but a personal foul penalty pushed it back to the 19 and the Big Reds tried a 35 yard field goal by Jeff Lantz which was no good with 11:17 on the clock in the second quarter.
GW finally got on the board with 36 seconds left before the intermission when the Patriots put together a nine-play, 82 yard drive that saw a mixture of Britton passes and runs by Mollett. The touchdown came on a five yard completion to tight end Dustin Crouser.
PHS got a 23 yard kickoff return by Wenzel and a 15 yard unsportsmanlike conduct penalty on GW moved it to the Big Red 49 with 28.9 seconds remaining. It took just 10 seconds for Wasonga to cover the 51 yards to the end zone for the go-ahead score with Lantz kicking the extra point. His run saw him shake off the last would-be tackler some 20 yards down the field with an effort of great determination.
GW tied the game on Williams' 57 yard run, a play which saw him appear to be tackled near the sidelines at midfield only to keep his balance and speed up the sidelines for a surprising score as Big Red fans sat in stunned silence.
The Big Reds answered that score with a 58 yard drive to the end zone. After a two yard run by Daniel Shank, Wasonga carried seven straight times to reach the end zone with 4:43 on the clock. The missed extra point kick made it 20-14 but was a prelude of things to come for PHS.
