PHS Beats Capital 28-14; Earns Playoff Spot; Wasonga Sets Records, Has 4 TD's

Faced with the unbelievable challenge of needing to beat three higher ranked teams in their final three games in order to make the 2009 Class AAA playoffs the Parkersburg Big Reds have accomplished that task.

PHS defeated Capital 28-14 at Charleston's Laidley Field in the third straight must-win contest.

The Big Reds finished the regular season at 6-4 and will now move into the top 16 in the final ratings to earn that playoff spot. They will finish somewhere between 13th and 15th in the final ratings, meaning an away game with either Bridgeport, South Charleston or Spring Valley. Capital was ranked 11th and is now 5-4 going into their regular season finale next week against winless Huntington. The final ratings will not be decided until next weekend with the playoffs set to start Nov. 13-14.

Allan Wasonga led the way for PHS against Capital as he scored four touchdowns and ran for 256 yards on 29 carries. The scoring plays covered five, 49, 69 and three yards. He pushed his season totals to 2,110 yards rushing and 27 touchdowns on the ground, both Big Red school records despite missing one-half of four different games this year. The previous 10-game mark was 1,788 yards rushing and 26 TD's on the ground set three years ago by Matt Lindamood. Lindamood and Wasonga share the regular season total touchdown record of 28. Lindamood went on to run for 2,473 yards in 14 games and had 35 touchdown runs (38 total touchdowns) as he earned Kennedy Award runner-up honors for the two-time state champs.

Derek Wenzel passed for 129 yards as he completed eight of 12 passes with Stephen Roush catching seven for 103 yards. Meanwhile, the Big Red defense held Capital in check with the exception of quarterback Joshua Sharp, who ran for 108 yards and scored on plays covering 31 and 14 yards. Capital all-state running back Keion Wright was held to 64 yards on 11 carries but did eclipse the 1,000 yard mark for the season.

Ryan Black and Roush were the leading tacklers for the Big Reds while Jason Phillips had two quarterback sacks and Chad Collins came up with an interception and two pass-breakups. Chase Garrett and Seth Fredrick also had fumble recoveries as the Big Reds came up with three turnovers.

The Big Reds started the game by driving from their own 20 to the Capital 15 yard line but the Cougars' Melvin Allen came up with an interception on the two yard line.

After an exchange of punts, Capital got on the board first, going 65 yards on seven plays with Sharp getting the final 31on a run around end with 1:45 left in the first quarter.

The teams took turns kicking the ball back and forth until Tyler Gherke got off a great kick that went out of bounds on the Capital four yard line. Two plays later the Cougars' fumbled as Matt Fritz knocked the ball out and Fredrick recovered at the Cougars' 25 yard line. An 18 yard completion to Roush moved the ball to the six and two plays later Wasonga scored untouched with 5:30 left to play as he slanted over the left side behind a lead block from Ben Clark. The extra point by Jeff Lantz tied the game at 7-all.

Forcing Capital to punt again on the next series, PHS started from its own 45 yard line. After a six yard gain on which he ran over Capital's Allen, Wasonga broke loose on a 49 yard scoring run with 3:16 to play and the score went to 14-7. On the touchdown run he broke a tackle in the backfield with his shoulder and then stepped through three more would-be defenders en route to the end zone.

Capital threatened to tie the game late when Sharp threw a Hail Mary pass that Allen caught and ran in for a 50 yard touchdown. But Allen had pushed the Big Red defender from behind to make the catch and was called for an offensive pass interference penalty which wiped out the touchdown and ended the first half.

The second half started with Capital picking up a first down on a 19 yard run by Wright but were later hit with two penalties and suffered a nine-yard loss on a sack by Phillips, forcing a punt.

PHS took over on its 31 yard line and on the first play, Wasonga did his thing again, getting some great blocking with only one hand being laid on him before turning on the speed and leaving Cougars in his wake on the 69 yard play that pushed the score to 20-7 with 9:30 on the clock.

Capital came back despite being forced to start from its own 15 yard line because of another fine punt by Gherke. On the third play of the series, Sharp broke loose for a 39 yard run. The Big Reds were flagged for a penalty on the play when someone shoved a facemask to try to ward off a blocker. The 15 yard penalty against PHS was tacked on at the end of the run, advancing the ball to the 17 yard line. Two plays later Sharp again skirted around end for the final 14 yards and a touchdown. The PAT made it 20-24 with 3.7 seconds left in the third quarter.

The Big Reds answered that threat despite starting from their own 20. Wasonga ran for 20, seven and 11 yards before Wenzel hit Roush deep for a 28 yard completion. The ball was underthrown but Roush came back to make the first down reception. Wasonga picked up 11 more on a run which saw him throw a stiff-arm that knocked the tackler completely back to the ground. He then scored from three yards away behind blocks from Garrett and Sonny Zickefoose with 9:42 left in the game. Wenzel scrambled and ran for the two-point conversion to make it 28-14.

After that the PHS defense forced a punt, came up with an interception by Collins (who returned it 34 yards to the Capital 44), and got a fumble when Collins stripped the ball and Garrett recovered on the Parkersburg 39 with 52 seconds to play. On the fumble play Wasonga made a rare appearance on defense and came up to deliver the hit of the game on a Capital blocker, sending both him and the offensive player going five feet in opposite directions
