Beckley Woodrow Wilson 2009
Super Start Powers PHS to 68-14 Win Over Beckley Woodrow Wilson
In what might have been the fastest start in the history of Parkersburg High School football, the Big Reds came up with four interceptions in the first six minutes of the game and one play into the second quarter had built a 40-0 lead en route to a 68-14 homecoming victory over Beckley Woodrow Wilson.
Scoring over 60 points for the second week in a row, PHS came up with six Beckley turnovers (including five interceptions in all). The Big Reds, who last week had over 600 yards in total offense, could manage "only" 513 yards this time but added 117 yards in kickoff returns and 122 yards in interception returns for 752 all-purpose yards.
Allan Wasonga played just one series into the second half but finished with 240 yards on 16 carries and four touchdowns. His fourth score came on the first play of the second quarter as he and Stephen Roush combined for six TD's in just 12:09.
The Big Reds ran for 387 yards on just 35 carries and added 126 through the air on five completions in seven attempts. Derek Wenzel threw for two touchdowns while completing four of six passes for 116 yards. Roush caught three passes for 102 yards and returned an interception for a touchdown (one of three interceptions he had during the game). Ryan Black caught the other TD from Wenzel. The PHS reserves scored three times in the last 14 minutes including an 83 yard kickoff return by Kevin Minehart.
Roush came up with his first interception just five plays into the game to thwart a Beckley scoring threat at the five yard line. PHS ran three plays to the 17 before Wasonga broke loose on one of his typical highlight reel runs. Taking the ball up the middle, he made a quick side step to his left just past the line of scrimmage, then turned on the afterburners. Kicking his speed into a much higher gear than any of the defenders, he simply outran the last two Beckley players who had an angle to make the play and completed a 72 yard run to the end zone with just over three minutes elapsed.
Beckley started its next series on the 11 and on the first play, Tyler Gibson stepped in front of a Pennington pass and ran it to the nine yard line (with the aid of a penalty). On the first play Wasonga found the end zone with 8:25 on the clock. Jeff Lantz's kick made it 14-0.
Beckley started its third possession on the 20 and this time took two plays to turn it over again as Jeremy Bell tipped the ball and Roush gathered it in at the 32 yard line and raced into the end zone for the third TD of the night with 7:33 remaining in the first quarter.
The fourth try for Beckley ended just like the first three, this time taking two plays before Chad Collins picked off the Pennington aerial and ran it back 34 yards to the Beckley 20. Three plays later Wasonga was in the end zone again, this time following Zach Stanley's block over the left side from two yards out to make it 27-0 with 5:14 still remaining in the first quarter.
With Bell making three straight tackles, Beckley did not turn the ball over on its next possession, but did have to punt with Parkersburg taking over on its own 18 yard line after a 49 yard punt with no return.
On the first play, Wenzel dropped back into the pocket and found Roush all alone behind the Beckley secondary for an 82 yard catch-and-run reception for the fifth TD on the first quarter with 2:47 left in the initial period.
PHS forced another Beckley punt after three plays and the Big Reds started from their own 20 with 1:13 left in the first quarter. Three runs by Wasonga put the ball on the Woodrow 42 as the quarter finally expired. With a minute breather between quarter, that was all Wasonga needed as the speedy junior broke it all the way for his fourth touchdown of the night to make it 40-0 after the kick by Lantz.
Things calmed down after that with Beckley threatening to score on its next possesion only to have Ben Clark break through and block a 44 yard field goal attempt. Beckley moved the ball well on its final possession of the first half but actually seemed content to let the clock run out although the Flying Eagles had moved the ball to the PHS 36 before the nightmarish (for the visitors) first half ended.
The Big Reds took the ball to start the second half and drove 65 yards on nine plays to score on Wenzel's 14 yard pass to Black. The TD was set up by Wasonga's 25 yard run, which was his last carry of the night with nine minutes left in the third quarter.
Beckley suffered two more turnovers after that, another interception and a lost fumble, while PHS scored on a 10 yard pass from Alex Ash to Bell and a 73 yard run by Daniel Shank. The visitors finally put two scores on the board but after the second, Kevin Minehart returned the kickoff 83 yards for a PHS touchdown with 25 seconds left in the game.
Corey Oshe and Bell were unofficially the leading tacklers on defense.
Beckley had 439 yards in total offense with 370 coming on the ground but did not score until the final three minutes of the game against Parkersburg's second defensive unit. Gaston Smith ran for 165 yards on 21 carries while quarterback J.C. Pennington picked up 112 on 10 attempts but completed just seven of 17 passes for 69 yards while suffering five interceptions.
