Row, Wenzel Power PHS Past Spartans 38-14

Chris Row scored three touchdowns and ran for 218 yards while Derek Wenzel had a hand in three touchdowns, including his third kickoff return of the year, to lead PHS past the host Greenbrier East Spartans by a 38-14 score.

The Big Reds won their second game in a row by scoring the first three times they had the ball. Row ran wild for over 200 yards on just 20 carries, scoring twice on the ground and also catching an 11 yard scoring reception on a halfback pass from Wenzel. Wenzel not only threw for a touchdown but scored two himself, one on an incredible 55 yard run from scrimmage and the other on an 85 yard kickoff return. His third kick return TD of the season is believed to be a school record. As if that weren't enough the junior standout had a 73 yard punt in the third quarter.

Playing with no operating scoreboard or play clock, the Big Reds weren't bothered by that or the three-plus hour bus ride to Lewisburg as they scored all three times they had the ball in the first half. The first drive began on their own 37 and 12 plays later they scored on a halfback pass from Wenzel to Row. Wenzel took the handoff to his right and hit Row, who made a high-reaching grab for the six pointer. Row ran five times on the drive for 26 yards and three first downs while the big play was a 13 yard completion from Matt Newlon to Wes Ankrom. The two completions on the drive were the only ones of the night for PHS, which tried just one more pass the rest of the game.

East answered the opening touchdown with an 80 yard scoring drive that ended with a three yard run by Travis Butts. The big play was a 39 pass over the middle which Andre Sinclair made a one-hand catch.

The Big Reds then put together a 75 yard drive that reached the end zone in just five plays, thanks in large part to a 53 yard run by Row. Row got the TD on an eight yard run over the left side and then ran for the two-point conversion to make it 14-6 midway through the second quarter.

PHS got the ball back four minutes later on its own 41 and scored in three plays thanks to a great run by Wenzel, who went around right end, cut back to make one defender miss, then cut back again to make another tackler miss before reaching the end zone on one last-ditch dive. Jeff Lantz kicked the extra point to make it 21-6 at the half.

The third quarter saw Wenzel get off his 73 yard kick to get PHS out of a hole made by three plays for minus 19 yards and a penalty which put the visitors back on their 14 yard line. East drove into Big Red territory but Tyler Gibson came up with an interception on the eight yard line which he ran out to the PHS 42.

The Spartans scored early in the fourth quarter on a 59 yard, nine-play drive to cut the margin to 21-14 but Wenzel took the ensuing kickoff and headed up the middle. He appeared to stop at about his own 25 but then cut toward the left sideline and out-raced the opponents to the end zone to cap an 85 yard play.

A fumble recovery by Michael Riblett on the Parkersburg 41 gave Row another chance to show his skill as he broke off a 50 yard run on the second play from scrimmage. The drive stalled at the six and Lantz came on to kick a 23 yard field goal with approximately seven minutes left to play and pushed the PHS lead to 31-14.

An insurance score came with under a minute to play when PHS put together a 74 yard, 10 play drive on the ground that was highlighted by a 35 yard run from Row, who was sprung by a block from Jason Phillips.

  2007 Results

Big Reds Swat Spartans 51-0

Rolling up some impressive statistics, the number one ranked Big Reds rambled to a 51-0 homecoming win over the visiting Spartans from Greenbrier East as Matt Lindamood once again led the way with three touchdowns and 167 yards rushing and receiving.

Winning their fifth game of the season and 19th in a row, the Big Reds amassed 367 yards rushing and 71 passing for a 438 yard total for the night while holding East, now 2-3, to 133 yards on the ground and six yards through the air. PHS scored twice in each of the first three quarters before the second offensive unit tacked on a six-pointer in the fourth quarter. East never got any closer to the PHS end zone than the Big Red 35 yard line as senior linebacker Matt Littleton led the way with unofficially 12 tackles including a sack and a tackle for a loss.

Lindamood caught a 12 yard scoring pass and ran in from three and seven yards out while finishing the night with 135 yards rushing on 15 attempts and catching two passes for 32 yards. For the season the senior all-stater has 18 touchdowns, 110 points, 1,061 yards rushing and 1,1687 all-purpose yards. He did not play in the fourth quarter.

Tyler Warner kicked seven extra points during the game while putting six of his eight kickoffs into the end zone (and booting a seventh 64 yards after a penalty to the one yard line). He also punted once for 37 yards and made a tackle.

The Big Reds wasted little time getting on the board after forcing the visitors to punt. Starting from their own 35, they drove to the end zone in 10 plays with Andy Thomas finding a wide open Lindamood in the back of the end zone to complete a 12 yard scoring play with 5:14 left in the first quarter. Twelve-yard runs by Lindamood and Joey Shafer, who finished with a career best 71 yards on nine carries, were the big plays on the drive. 

    A minute and a half later, PHS was on the board again as Thomas broke through to block a punt with Matt Winans picking up the ball at the 19 and racing into the end zone to make it 14-0. 

    The offense was still clicking later in the first quarter when it took over at its 33 following a punt. In nine plays the Big Reds sent Lindamood up the middle from the three and he scored standing up behind some tremendous blocking with 9:27 left in the second quarter. A 22-yard run by Shafer was the big play.

    The final TD of the half came with a drive that started from the PHS 39 with 6:09 on the clock. A 20 yard run by Thomas and a 22 yard carry by Allen Butterfield were two of the big plays as was a 20 yard reception by Lindamood to the six yard line. Butterfield got the TD on a run around left end for the final two yards.

    After Nathan Stemple and Caitlin Campbell were crowned King and Queen at halftime, PHS needed just six plays to go 69 yards and get TD number five, a seven yard standup run by Lindamood, who had runs of six, 15 and 38 yards preceding the score after being "held" to 31 yards in the first half.

    A 10-play, 85 yard drive on the next possession ended on Shafer's six-yard scoring jaunt. The Big Reds had five plays of 10 or more yards on the drive, three of them by Lindamood to go with a 13 yard run by Butterfield and a 12 yard reception by Stephen Roush.

    The final TD came on a two yard run by Anthony Thorpe to cap a 53 yard, five play drive that was highlighted by Chris Row's 34 yard run.
