Woodrow Wilson
Back-Up QB Carries Beckley Over PHS 31-20
Back-up quarterback Dominique Hairston ran for four touchdowns and 171 yards to lead Beckley Woodrow Wilson to a 31-20 win over the visiting Big Reds at Van Meter Stadium.
Hairston, a sophomore playing in place of two-year starter Ryan Stafford (who broke a bone in his hand in the season-opening win over Huntington), scored on runs of 54, 1, 56 and 16 yards as his mis-direction and speed proved too much for the PHS defense. Hairston ran the ball 17 times and also completed eight of 11 passes for 91 yards.
Vashawn Wood, a 6-4, 210 pound wingback, ran for 55 yards on seven carries and caught five passes for 62 more yards for Beckley while Rakeem Fowlkes ran for 54 yards on 10 carries. The Flying Eagles of coach John Lilly amassed 299 yards on the ground and finished with 392 yards in total offense.
The Big Reds got a big game from junior quarterback Derek Wenzel, who ran for one touchdown and threw for two more. Wenzel gained 129 yards on 19 carries with a 31 yard TD scamper. He completed eight of 19 passes for 74 yards with two juniors catching the scoring passes. Stephen Roush latched onto a 23 yard six-pointer and Ryan Black scored on a three yard catch in the back of the end zone. Roush caught four passes for 55 yards in the game as PHS finished with 178 yards rushing as a team.
Beckley took just one play and 26 seconds to get on the scoreboard as Woods returns the opening kickoff 37 yards to the 41 and then PHS was called for being offside. Hairston took the shotgun snap, faked one way, then the other before scampering up the middle and through the Big Red defense for 54 yards and a touchdown with 11:34 still showing on the game clock.
PHS answered as Roush returned the ensuing kickoff 46 yards to the Beckley 42 and from there the Big Reds ran three plays to move the ball to the 31. From there Wenzel kept the ball around right end and scored with 9:36 on the clock. Jeff Lantz kicked the extra point to tie the game at 7-all.
Beckley got the ball back later in the quarter on its own 32 after PHS ran out of downs. The Eagles then drove 68 yards in 10 plays with Hairston going over on a sneak from the one on the first play of the second quarter. Hairston had a 25 yard run as the big play on that drive.
PHS was forced to punt with Beckley getting the ball back on its own 44 with 10:03 on the clock. Pulling a repeat of his game-opening run, Hairston raced 56 yards up the middle for a touchdown which put the home team up 21-7.
Once again the Big Reds responded, going 65 yards on eight plays. A 33-yard scramble by Wenzel was the biggest play of the drive with the TD coming on a fourth and 11 play from the 23 when Wenzel found a streaking Roush down the left sidelines and into the end zone.
Beckley missed a 40 yard field goal with 44 seconds left in the half.
PHS started the second half by driving from its 46 to the Beckley 25 but two straight incomplete passes turned the ball over on downs.
The Eagles followed that with a 75-yard, 10 play drive for Hairston's fourth TD of the night. The speedy 10th grader had three pass completions for 44 yards on the drive which ended with a sprint up the middle for the final 16 yards with 2:47 left in the third quarter.
Trailing by two touchdowns, the Big Reds tried vainly to come back. Chris Row returned the kickoff 46 yards to the Beckley 31 on a play which saw three different penalties and two ejections. Starting from the Woodrow 23 yard line, it took PHS seven plays to score with Wenzel finding Black along the back side of the end zone for the final three yards on a fourth down and goal to go play. The extra point kick was blocked with 11:27 remaining in the contest.
Beckley put together a long, 10-play drive which resulted in a 25 yard field goal by Adam Cook to up the lead to 31-20.
PHS put together a 14-play, 59 yard drive but it ran out on a four down incomplete pass at the Woodrow 17 yard line. The Eagles were then able to pick up a first down and run out the final 1:43 of the game.
Defensively, Michael Winans was in on 14 tackles for PHS with an additional two tackles for loss.

Lindamood Does It Again!
5 TDs as PHS Beats Beckley
For the second week in a row Matt Lindamood scored five touchdown as the Big Reds bounced visiting Beckley Woodrow Wilson 35-7 before 5,000 fans at Stadium Field.
Lindamood ran for 139 yards on 20 carries, caught three passes for 50 yards and even scored a two-point conversion to power PHS to its 16th straight victory and keep the Big Red seniors' perfect home record intact. Andy Thomas added 101 yards on 12 carries as the Big Reds rolled up 251 yards on the ground while holding Beckley to just 39 yards on 24 rushing attempts.
The Big Red defense held Beckley's Marquel Ali in check, allowing him only seven yards rushing on eight attempts although he did catch a 26 yard touchdown pass to account for the Flying Eagles' only score of the night. Last week Ali (who has 4.3 speed in the 40) had three touchdowns, 165 yards rushing and 81 yards receiving in a 29-22 win over Huntington. The Eagles had over 400 yards in offense last week but were held to 183 yards by PHS, which came up with two interceptions.
In addition to running for over 100 yards, Thomas completed five of six passes for 61 yards as PHS finished the night with 312 yards in total offense.
The Big Reds started the game right as Josh Jenkins and Matt Winans sacked Beckley quarterback Ryan Stafford on the first play of the game for an eight yard loss back to one yard line. Three plays later the visitors were forced to punt from their own 12 and could only get off a 15 yard kick with PHS taking over two and half minutes into the game just 27 yards away from the end zone. It took four plays for Lindamood to go over from a yard out with 7:54 on the clock. Tyler Warner's kick made it 7-0.
Beckley responded by putting together its best drive of the night, going 78 yards on 11 plays. On the ground the Eagles of coach John Lilly had zero net yards on four attempts but in the air Stafford completed six of seven passes with the final one going to Ali up the left sidelines for the last 26 yards with 2:23 on the first quarter clock. The kick tied the game at 7-all.
The Big Reds' answer to that score was typical - run Lindamood right at the defense and see if they can stop him.
The senior all-stater finished the 70-yard, six play drive with runs of 22 and 25 yards to reach the end zone on the first play of the second quarter. After making his first attempt, Warner had to kick again because of a deadball penalty against Beckley and wound up missing his second try.
Beckley's next possession ended with a punt - which went for minus six yards. The Big Reds took over at the Woodrow 28 this time and took four plays for Lindamood to score standing up with 8:03 left in the half. PHS went for two and missed but an interference penalty put the ball just a yard and a half away and it was an easy matter for Lindamood to follow Josh Jenkins for the two-point conversion to make it 21-7.
PHS took over with 4:26 left in the half following a Beckley punt to the Big Red 22 yard line. Three plays into the possession, Thomas found Lindamood with a middle screen and the result was a 73 yard touchdown jaunt. However, the Big Reds were called for holding and somehow the result was a first down on the PHS 34 although the penalty flag appeared to be thrown on the Beckley 40 yard line. It didn't really matter, though, as three plays later Thomas broke away for a 27 yard run to the Woodrow Wilson 38 and on the next play ran the same screen pass to Lindamood, who carried it inside the nine yard line. Two plays later Lindamood again went into the end zone standing up behind the blocking of the left side of the line. Warner's kick made it 28-7 with 38 seconds remaining in the second quarter.
The Big Reds started the second half by driving for a 42 yard field goal attempt by Warner that was wide left with 8:13 on the clock.
Beckley then got a break when PHS fumbled away a fair catch attempt on a punt with the Eagles recovering on the PHS 32. But the Big Red defense held and got a fourth down interception from Brandon Eckleberry on their own 23.
Although forced to punt, PHS got the ball back three plays later when Travis Bunner came up with an interception return to the Beckley 20. However, a penalty on the return forced the Big Reds to start from the Beckley 47.
A 21 yard run by Thomas was the big play on a drive which took eight plays and saw four flags thrown, including double personal fouls each way. With 8:02 left in the game, Lindamood did the honors once again from a yard away and Warner's kick made it 35-7.
Beckley finished the game by driving 60 yards on 12 plays but seemed content to run out the clock and suffer their first loss.
