Big Reds Nip Vikings 24-23

A one-point victory was a fitting way to end the 2008 season for the Parkersburg High School football team as the Big Reds held on to defeat the host Ripley Vikings by a 24-23 score.

After starting the season with a one-point loss to Cabell Midland on an extra point play, the Big Reds watched Ripley's normally automatic kicker, Thomas Motes, try to tie the game with 44 seconds left but his point after touchdown boot hit the right goal post upright and bounced back to enable the Big Reds to pull off the one-point victory and keep coach Bernie Buttrey from having his worst record at PHS.

Derek Wenzel and Stephen Roush, two talented juniors, provided the spark for PHS. Wenzel ran for 186 yards on 22 carries and scored two touchdowns while Roush came up with three interceptions (two of them near his own end zone) to thwart the very effective Viking passing game led by senior quarterback Seth Parsons. Parsons completed 18 of 26 passes for 166 yards and one touchdown.

Roush came up with his first interception of the night on Ripley's second offensive play as he picked off an overthrown pass at his own 45 and returned it to the Ripley 44, setting up the first PHS score.

A big eight yard run by Wenzel on fourth down and three to go kept the eight play drive alive and on third down quarterback Matt Newlon hit Tyler Gibson with a 23 yard screen pass down the left sideline to the Ripley one yard line. On the next play Chris Row followed the blocks of Kyle Smith and Ryan Black into the end zone. Row's 14th TD of the year came with 6:18 left in the first quarter and sophomore Jeff Lantz kicked the first of  his three crucial extra points.

Ripley answered in less than four minutes with well-conceived short passing game. Five straight completed passes moved the ball to the Parkersburg 19. Another short run and pass advanced the ball to the eight where an offside penalty (one of four penalties during that game that gave Ripley a first down) moved it to a first and goal on the four. Seth Hamrick then went around right end with 2:31 left in the quarter for the touchdown with Motes adding the extra point.

The Vikings got the ball back following a PHS punt and quickly moved to midfield. From there Parsons tried to go deep but Roush was there to pick off the pass at the seven yard line and return it six yards to the 13.

From there PHS made an offensive change, putting Wenzel at quarterback. On the first play from scrimmage the speedy Wenzel ran around left end for 38 yards. Six plays later from the Viking 17, Wenzel ran the option to his left and used a fake pitch to get himself clear at the 10 before sprinting into the end zone for the TD with 7:13 left in the first half.

Once again Ripley answered. This time putting together a 68 yard drive that took 13 plays and used over six minutes. The Vikings converted twice on third down (one via penalty) and once on fourth down before scoring on a three yard run by Adam Rutter with 54 seconds left in the half.

The Big Reds broke the 14-14 tie with a 13 play drive that ate up nearly five minutes off the clock. An 11 yard pass from Wenzel to Wes Ankrom gave PHS a first and goal at the six yard line and an offside penalty moved the ball to the three. But at that point things turned sour as Row was hit for a two yard loss and Wenzel was sacked for an 11 yard loss. On third down the pass intended for Ankrom was overthrown, bringing on Lantz, who calmly kicked a 33 yard field goal with 5:37 on the third quarter clock.

Aided by a 37 yard kickoff return and a 15 yard penalty on PHS, Ripley started its next offensive possession on the Parkersburg 34 yard line and passed for a first down to the 20. But when Parsons tried to throw to the goal line, Roush was there again, intercepting at the two yard line. Roush's momentum carried him into the end zone, where he knelt to down the ball but the officials ruled the ball was to be placed at the two, forcing the Big Reds to start their offense 98 yards from the Ripley goal line.

That didn't appear to be a problem, however, as Christian Ong broke off a 28 yard run followed by a 24 yard scamper around left end by Wenzel. But a third down dropped pass forced PHS to punt and the Viking got the ball back on their own 10 yard line.

The PHS defense held and forced a punt but the Vikings got a break when the kicker was run into well after the ball was away for an automatic first down penalty. Ripley got a big third down pass completion with the receiver catching the ball on the ground and picked up another first down on a face mask penalty that moved the ball to the Parkersburg six yard line. However, the Big Red defense held and Motes came on to kick a 24 yard field goal to tie the game at 17-all with 6:23 left in the contest.  Ripley ran 16 plays to set up that field goal drive.

Wenzel brought the PHS fans back to their feet on the ensuing possession with a 74 yard touchdown run but he was ruled out of bounds on the Ripley 45 after a pickup of 29 yards. On fourth and one from the 36, Ong went over right tackle for seven yards and the first down to keep the drive alive and three plays later Wenzel sprinted around the left side before cutting back at the three to avoid a last would-be tackler to complete a 15 yard touchdown run. Lantz kicked the PAT to make it 24-17 with just 2:23 left in the game.

The Vikings returned the kickoff to their own 33 but a 15 yard personal foul on PHS put the ball just 52 yards away from the end zone. Parsons again used the short, sideline passes to move the ball to the seven yard line and got the touchdown when he scrambled around in the pocked before finding Scotty Ullom over the middle at the goal line with 44 seconds remaining. The Big Reds tried unsuccessfully for the block and was disappointed for a split-second before watching the ball hit the upright and bounce back toward them, setting off a celebration.

Jason Phillips recovered the onside kick attempt and Newlon took a knee twice to preserve the victory.

The statistics were as even as the game with PHS having a 326-308 edge in total offense while Ripley held a 21-19 margin in first downs and ran 61 plays to 60 for PHS.

Lindamood Scores 3 As Big Reds Sink Vikings 55-3; Await Home Playoff Game

Matt Lindamood scored three touchdowns then went to the bench with 10:33 left in the third quarter to watch the Big Reds wrap up a 55-3 victory over visiting Ripley and notch their ninth win of the season - a win that secured home field advantage through the first two rounds of the Class AAA playoffs.

The three touchdowns gives the senior running back 28 for the year and the victory means PHS will stay at home through the first and second rounds of the playoffs, which will begin in two weeks. The Big Reds came into the game ranked second in the state behind George Washington but figure to drop to third in next week's ratings after Martinsburg was given back its two forfeited games by a judge's decision. The win was the 23rd in last 24 games for the Big Reds while Ripley suffered its seventh loss in nine outings.

PHS actually trailed 3-0 at the end of the first quarter but scored on the first play of the second quarter, then tacked on three more touchdowns before halftime to go up 28-3. After Lindamood scored on a 51 yard run just 1:27 into the third quarter, most of the PHS starting lineup went to the bench and the reserves came on to score three more times to account for the final margin.

Lindamood ran the ball 13 times for 98 yards while Andy Thomas scored one TD on an interception return and passed to Tyler Humphrey for a 69 yard pass-and-run touchdown. Humphrey, Steve Armitage and Matt Newlon added second half touchdown runs as PHS amassed 439 yards in total offense, 333 of it coming on the ground. Three different PHS quarterbacks completed a total of four passes for 105 yards.

Ripley had 233 yards in total offense with 124 of it coming through the air with Seth Parsons completing 17 of 29 passes with one interception. However, the Vikings never got any closer to the PHS goal line than the 27 yard line, from where Thomas Motes kicked a 44 yard field goal with 5:13 left in the first quarter. The Vikings' longest pass completion was only 17 yards and the Ripley offense was further hampered by Tyler Warner putting nine straight kickoffs into the end zone.

The Vikings had the game's first possession and starting from their own 20 with a five-wide receiver spread formation, moved the ball with short passes to the PHS 27 but a third down pass was broken up by Brandon Eckelberry and Motes came on to kick the field goal that gave his team its only lead of the contest.

The Big Reds responded with a 14-play, 82 yard drive that took 6:52 and culminated with Lindamood taking a pitch from Thomas and going around left end for the touchdown from three yards away on the first play of the second quarter. Warner's kick hit the upright bar but PHS had the lead for good at 6-3.

PHS forced Ripley to punt four plays later and starting from their own 37 the Big Reds drove quickly for another three-yard TD run by Lindamood. This time the drive took five plays and required only 2:40 as the big play was a 31 yard run around left end by Thomas. Thomas passed to Joey Shafer for the two-point conversion and a 14-3 lead.

Just seconds later Thomas scored on an 18-yard interception return after the senior captain came up with a tipped pass and raced untouched into the end zone with 8:15 left in the half. Warner's kick made it 21-3.

Although Ripley picked up a couple of first downs on its next possession the Vikings were finally forced to punt and PHS took over on its own 31 with 5:04 on the clock. Thomas required just one play to find a wide open Tyler Humphrey near the right sidelines and the sophomore sped into the end zone for the first of his two touchdowns on the night.

The Big Reds took the second half kickoff and began from their own 34. After Lindamood picked up nine yards and Shafer six to move the ball to the 49 it was time for "The Mood" to show his stuff. Taking the handoff over the right side, the talented senior runner cut back against the grain and quickly got into the open up the left sidelines from where he rambled into the end zone to complete a 51 yard play with just 1:27 gone in the half. Although the extra point run attempt by holder Wes Ankrom failed, PHS was up 34-3 and coach Bernie Buttrey decided it was time to send his starters to the bench for good.

After getting a couple of first downs, Ripley punted and PHS started from its own 35. Nine plays later, Humphrey scored on a beautiful counter play from 18 yards away to make it 41-3 after Warner's conversion. A fumble recovery by Anthony Thorpe ended Ripley's next possession and Steve Armitage ran the same play Humphrey had scored on to collect his touchdown from eight yards out and cap a 32-yard drive in five plays. The Big Red reserves scored again on their next possession as Jordan Powell got the ball on a fumble recovery at the Ripley 31. Eight plays later Newlon scored on a one yard sneak after Christian Ong set up the play with two runs for 14 yards to the one. Newlon also had a 14 yard pass completion to Tommy Hathaway on the drive.

The Big Reds used 13 different ball carriers in the game with three different quarterbacks completing passes. In addition to Lindamood's 98 yards, Thomas had 58, Shafer and Butterfield 43 each, Humphrey 35 and Ong 25 to lead the way on the ground while Thomas was 2-for-2 in the air for 86 yards while Thorpe was one of two for five yards and Newlon completed his only attempt. The tackles were evenly distributed as well with Thorpe, Matt Winans and Eckelberry leading the way while Jason Phillips and Jon DeGarmo had sacks.
