Six Big Reds Score as PHS Swamps South 48-7 For 21st Win In a Row Six different Big Reds found the end zone, including 300-pound All-American lineman Josh Jenkins, as PHS ran its winning streak to 21 in a row with a 48-7 triumph before a crowd of 6,500 at Erickson Field. While Matt Lindamood had another big night, scoring two touchdowns and rushing for 179 yards on 15 carries before taking a seat late in the third quarter, everyone had a big night for the Big Reds, who came into the game 6-0 and ranked number one in the state. Andy Thomas ran for one score and threw for another while Stephen Roush caught the scoring pass. Joey Shafer added a score on a six yard run and even Jenkins got in on the fun when he was inserted into the Power-I backfield with Lindamood and Shafer inside the South 10 yard line. Two carries produced his first career rushing touchdown. Offensively, PHS rolled up 18 first downs and 346 yards rushing on 45 attempts. Thomas completed three of six passes (all in the first half) for another 23 yards. Defensively, the PHS prevent unit held South to seven first downs (only one in the first half), only 54 yards rushing and only 52 passing (6 of 12 with one intercepted). South won the toss, elected to defer and the Big Reds decided to show their traditional style of play from the very beginning. PHS drove 78 yards on 16 plays, consuming nearly nine minutes (8:54) of the clock. As Lindamood, Shafer and Thomas took turns running the ball down the field behind the Fab Five, PHS showed some diversity on the touchdown when Thomas rolled left and found Roush in the left corner of the end zone for an 11 yard scoring pass with 3:06 on the clock. Tyler Warner's kick was low but the 6-0 lead was just the beginning. South ran three plays, gained two yards and tried to punt from its own 22. A bad snap forced Chase Fieler to run with the ball and he was swarmed under for a 10 yard loss. Starting just 12 yards away from the end zone, the PHS offense took three plays to double the score on Lindamood's run up the middle with 20.8 seconds left in the first quarter. Thomas passed to lanky Kyle Smith in the back of the end zone for the two-point conversion to make it 14-0. Another outstanding defensive stand by PHS, holding South to minus four yards on three plays, forced another punt, which Roush returned seven yards to the Patriot 40 and once again the Big Reds had a short field to try to score. The field got shorter in a hurry as Lindamood broke off one of his patented runs, shaking off would-be tacklers and going 25 yards up the middle to the 15 yard line. Three plays later Thomas faked to Lindamood and kept over the right side for TD number three. Another three-and-out by the South offense, gave PHS the ball back again on the South 40 and even a holding penalty could only slow things down. An 18 yard pickup by Lindamood was followed by a great leaping, stretched-out pass reception for 14 yards by Roush. On third down from the 20 Lindamood went over right tackle, weaved through the defense and scored standing up for his second TD. Warner's kick made it 28-0. South did get a first down on its final possession on a 20 yard scramble by quarterback Zach McMullen but an interception by Derek Wenzel, his fourth of the year, stopped South from officially getting into Big Red territory. The third quarter was more of the same as PHS got possession on the South 24 after another low snap on a punt attempt. Two plays, and 18 yard run by Lindamood and a six yard carry by Shafer, produced the touchdown. Another three-and-out by the South offense, put PHS back in business following a punt on the Patriot 48. PHS moved to the 30 and Thomas gained 15 yards on a great second-effort run only to have the ball stripped by South's Cory Hamilton, who returned it 85 yards for the touchdown with 3:55 left in the quarter. South tried an onside kick but did not give PHS a chance to field the ball by catching the kick in the air. The penalty was declined, PHS took over on its own 40 and on the first play, Lindamood went up the middle, broke over the right side and picked up 52 yards before being run out of bounds. In came Jenkins, who carried for four yards. A South penalty put the ball on the two and Jenkins got the call again, going over right guard for the touchdown with 2:23 left in the third quarter. South did threaten against the PHS second defensive unit,
driving to the eight yard line but came up short when a fourth down pass
fell incomplete. Meanwhile, the PHS second offensive unit put together a 44
yard scoring drive that was capped by Christian Ong's three yard run for the
final point spread.
