Big Plays Carry Big Reds To 48-14 Homecoming Win Over Lincoln

Big plays, including a 99 yard interception return for a touchdown by Derek Wenzel, carried the Parkersburg Big Reds to a 48-14 homecoming victory over Lincoln County.

The win was the third in a row for the Big Reds as they evened their record at 3-3 thanks to three touchdowns apiece from Wenzel and Chris Row. Wenzel ran for two touchdowns and had the long interception for another six-pointer while Row had two short TD runs and also ran back a punt 49 yards for a touchdown as the Big Reds built a 48-6 lead through three quarters and coasted to the victory.

The other PHS touchdown came on a 40 yard pass from Matt Newlon to Stephen Roush. The Big Reds had 313 yards in total offense despite letting the junior varsity play the last 15 minutes of the game. Wenzel finished with 90 yards rushing on 12 carries while Row had 33 on 10 carries. Newlon completed eight of 15 passes for 121 yards while Wenzel was 2-for-2 for 32 yards. Wes Ankrom caught five passes for 74 yards and Roush grabbed two for 43.

Lincoln County had 284 yards in total offense with 196 coming off the arm of Tyler Browning, who completed just 10 of 36 passes and was intercepted three times as Roush and Zach Cokeley also had pickoffs. Jacob Lucas had a 66 yard reception for a TD among his six catches for 139 yards. The other Lincoln touchdown came when the PHS reserves fumbled the ball away in their own end zone.

The big plays for PHS were started by the defense as Jason Phillips blocked the first of two punts on the night just 1:14 into the game. Tyler Gibson recovered on the Lincoln nine yard line and two plays later Wenzel swept around right end for the touchdown with 10:05 showing on the clock. Jeff Lantz kicked the first of six extra points to make it 7-0.

The first quarter ended with PHS scoring its second touchdown, a 40 yard completion over the middle to Roush, who got a big downfield block from Justin Johnson to free him to the end zone.

A sustained drive followed that on the first Big Red possession of the second quarter. An 80-yard, eight play drive was capped by Row's five yard run over left tackle with Ryan Black and Zach Stanley leading the way with 7:16 on the clock. There were five plays of 10 or more yards on the drive with the biggest being a 26 yard run by Row. Newlon completed three of three pass attempts for 33 yards with Ankrom catching two and Black one along the way.

The defense got back in the picture on the ensuing possession by the visiting Panthers. On third down Browning tried to hit 6-foot-4 Jacob Ashworth over the middle but just as he touched the ball he was leveled by Cory Ohse on a hit which was heard all over the stadium. Two plays later Lincoln had to punt from its own 13 and Row gathered the kick in near midfield and raced up the left sidelines to the end zone to make it 28-0 with 6:12 left in the half.

Lincoln got on the board moments later when Browning hit a speeding Jacob Lucas up the sidelines and the senior receiver went 66 yards for the touchdown with 5:52 on the clock.

The fifth TD of the night for the Big Reds was set up by another Phillips blocked punt, this one recovered on the Lincoln 20 with 1:19 on the clock. Newlon immediately hit Ankrom with a 15 yard completion along the left sideline but the Panthers' defense stiffened, allowing just three yards in three plays. But on fourth and goal from the two, Row followed the blocking of Kyle Smith and Cody Craig into the end zone. Lantz kicked the PAT to make it 35-6 at the half.

In the third quarter PHS put together a 75 yard scoring drive, taking 10 plays to reach the end zone on Wenzel's run over left tackle from the one with 7:08 on the clock. Wenzel, playing quarterback for this series, ran five times for 34 yards on the drive and completed two passes for 32 yards (one a 29 yard hook-up with Ankrom). The big play on the drive came on a fourth and three situation when Wenzel carried the ball, shook off a hit in the backfield and picked up eight yards for the first down to keep the drive alive.

The junior captain created even more excitement a few minutes later when he halted a Lincoln drive that had moved the ball from its own 33 to the PHS 31. But when Browning tried to go to the end zone, his receiver fell down inside the 20 and Wenzel was waiting at the goal line for the easy interception. Told by the official that he was not in the end zone, Wenzel took off up the middle, stepped out of one last would-be tackler at midfield and wound up with a 99 yard interception return for a touchdown.

Wenzel now had nine touchdowns on the year, four of them on returns.

PHS picked off two more passes in the next four minutes, one each by Zack Cokeley and Stephen Roush while the Big Red junior varsity played the final 15 minutes of offense. During that span the bright spot was a 31 yard run by freshman Jake Gold, moved up to the varsity because of a shortage of wingback. The low spot came when the offense came on the field after PHS had held Lincoln on downs at the four yard line and proceeded to fumble the ball away in the end zone for a Lincoln touchdown with 7:29 left in the game.

At halftime, Stacey Lemasters and Chase Stasny were crowned homecoming queen and king.

Thomas Has Hand In 5 TDs as PHS Pounds Lincoln 62-16

Making the most of the little amount of time they had the ball, the Big Reds pounded winless Lincoln County 62-16 as senior quarterback Andy Thomas had a hand in five of the nine touchdowns recorded.

Thomas ran for two touchdowns, passed for two touchdowns and returned an interception for another score as number one ranked PHS won for the sixth time this season and upped its winning streak to 20 games in a row. The Big Reds ran just 38 plays to 69 for the home team but that was more than enough as the PHS defense scored twice and came up with six Panther turnovers. The PHS first string offense ran just four plays in the second half and only 21 plays for the entire game. Overall the Big Reds amassed 430 yards in total offense, including 359 yards rushing on just 32 attempts. The PHS reserves tacked on two fourth quarter scores.

In addition to Thomas, who ran for 35 yards on four carries and completed three of five passes for 71 yards, Matt Lindamood had a touchdown and gained 133 yards - on only eight carries, just one in the second half. Stephen Roush had all three PHS receptions for 71 yards while back-up fullback Christian Ong gained 71 yards on just five attempts.

Lincoln managed to move the ball somewhat on both the ground and through the air. Tailback Ricky Huffman ran 27 times for 93 yards while quarterback Tyler Browning completed 13 of 24 passes for 159 yards. Although Browning was intercepted three times he did managed to throw for one TD and run for another.

The Big Reds actually scored on the game's first offensive play when sophomore Derek Wenzel picked off Browning's pass on the Lincoln 37 and returned it for a touchdown but an illegal block at the five yard negated the touchdown.

Which only meant that PHS would have to go on offense from the Panther 15 and would require another minute to get the game's first touchdown. A seven yard run by Lindamood set up Thomas' fake up the middle and carry around the right side and into the end zone with 10:46 left on the clock.  Tyler Warner, who impressed the Lincoln fans with his 57 yard field goal in warm-ups, booted the first of his six extra points.

Although Lincoln picked up a couple of first downs on its second series, the Panthers had to punt and PHS started from its own 28. Four plays later Thomas found Roush in the right flat and the sophomore receiver hauled in the pass and sped into the end zone to complete a 37 yard scoring play with 3:42 left in the first quarter.

Forcing another punt and starting from their own 44, the Big Reds took only three plays to register their third TD as Lindamood gave one of his now patented shake off a tackler and drag a tackler for 38 yards to start the drive and then score two plays later after taking a pitch and going around right end with 57 seconds left in the quarter.

Lincoln pulled off a mild surprise by driving 80 yards on 12 plays (plus a roughing the passer penalty against PHS). A couple of big passes to Schuyler Pritchard were the big plays on the scoring march. The two-point conversion pass made it 21-8 with 8:21 left in the first half.

PHS tacked on a couple of late scores to run the margin to 34-8 at  halftime. The first came at the end of a seven-play 61 yard drive when Thomas faked into the middle and kept the ball around right end for a four yard TD run. Then, just 14 seconds later, Thomas forced a fumble and Matt Winans picked up the ball and raced 20 yards for a score. The half ended with Anthony Thorpe coming up with an interception.

The Big Red first offensive unit took the second half kickoff, ran four plays and was through for the night. A 35 yard run by Lindamood came on the second play and ended his work load for the night. A four yard run by Joe Shafer set up Thomas' 16 yard scoring pass to Roush with 10:29 on the clock.

Lincoln moved into Big Red territory on its first possession of the second half, aided by a pass interference penalty which saw the contact and the flags fly well after the pass had already gone out of bounds. That was followed by an 18 yard penalty on an intentional grounding call and that was followed by Thomas picking off a pass over the middle and going 59 yards for a touchdown to run the score to 48-8 with 6:36 left in the third quarter.

The Panthers scored on their next possession going 70 yards on nine plays with the payoff coming when Browning threw into the end zone and two Big Reds batted the ball in the air only to have Pritchard come down with it for the TD.

The other PHS scores came in the fourth quarter. The first when Christian Ong did the honors on a three yard run which came immediately after a 42 yard burst over left tackle by the junior fullback. The final TD came after Lincoln failed to convert on a fourth down play at its own 36 yard line. A 14 yard gain by Ong and a 22 yard run around right end by Anthony Thorpe produced the touchdown.

On the negative side, PHS was penalized nine times for 96 yards in the game.
