GW Outruns PHS, 42-14
George Washington senior Roland Willis returned the opening kickoff 81 yards for a touchdown and that was just the beginning of the bad luck for Parkersburg's Big Reds as the visiting Patriots went on to post a 42-14 triumph at Stadium Field.
The number five ranked 6-1 Patriots would score five more touchdowns, including two of them by speedy Greg Jones. Jones ran for 240 yards on 27 carries and scored touchdowns on runs of one and 92 yards. Chris Vance bulled for a touchdown while Shaquille Williams ran one in from 26 yards away and Taylor Norman threw a 10 yard TD pass to Kristian Clay while Ansh Kumar kicked six extra points.
PHS, again playing without versatile junior co-captain Derek Wenzel, moved the ball well at times, scoring in the second and fourth quarters, but could not contain the GW running game. The Patriots ran for 358 yards and finished the night with 404 yards in total offense. The Big Reds had 126 yards rushing, 146 passing and ran 59 plays to 52 for the visiting team.
Christian Ong and Chris Row ran for touchdowns for the Big Reds with Jeff Lantz kicking both extra points. Row finished with 89 yards rushing on 19 carries while Ong had 39 on 10 attempts. Matt Newlon completed 14 of 26 passes for 146 yards with Wes Ankrom catching seven for 83 yards and Stephen Roush five for 36.
Willis got the game off to an exciting start when he grabbed the kickoff on his 19 yard line and raced up the left sidelines all the way to the end zone to score with just 15 seconds gone in the game.
PHS was forced to punt on its first possession and Ankrom put the ball inside the 20 to the GW 18. But the visitors got out of the hole in a hurry with a 23 yard pass to Michael Tucker. Then Jones and Williams reeled off runs of 21 and 20 yards to set up the 10 yard TD pass to a wide open sophomore tight end with 4:50 left in the first quarter.
Roush halted another GW threat with an end zone interception with 2:15 remaining in the first quarter.
Trailing 14-0, the Big Reds got on the board after a 37 yard interception return by Zach McGee to the GW 20 yard line. Ong carried twice for 11 yards before Row picked up four to the five yard line. From there Ong went over left tackle with 6:50 left in the second quarter. Lantz's kick made it 14-7.
But GW, who was the only team to beat PHS during the 2007 and 2008 seasons, responded by putting together a 10 play, 71 yard drive for its third touchdown. Jones carried five straight times to start the series (gaining 30 total yards) before the Pats mixed things up and got help in the form of a facemask penalty which took the ball to the Big Red 12 yard line. Three running plays up the middle produced the touchdown with Vance going the last five yards over right tackle with 2:24 on the clock.
GW also scored on its first possession of the second half, putting together a 10-play, 42 yard drive after a 21 yard punt return by Willis. On the third play of the drive Jones carried just past the line of scrimmage, fumbled the ball, but it bounced into the arms of Tucker, who ran it for nearly 14 yards to the PHS 16. The touchdown run by Jones came with 6:10 left in the third quarter on a fourth-and-goal play from the one foot line after PHS had made three straight stops inside the five yard line.
The Big Reds then turned the ball over near midfield as Ankrom caught a pass for an 11 yard gain to the GW 40 yard line only to fumble it away to Tucker, who ran it back to the PHS 46. GW took just two plays to score as Jones ran for 20 and Williams took it the final 26 to make the score 35-7.
PHS started the fourth quarter by driving to the GW six yard line thanks mainly to a 23 yard catch and run on a pass from Newlon to Row. But on third down from there Row was thrown for a two yard line and on fourth down Newlon overthrew Ankrom in the end zone.
On the very next play, Jones broke around left end and went 92 yards to the end zone to make it 42-7.
The Big Reds ended on a high note by going 80 yards on 12 plays to put six points on the board on an 11 yard run over left tackle by Row with 1:15 on the clock. Newlon hit Ankrom four times for a total of 48 yards on the drive while Row ran the ball seven times for 47 yards. PHS was hit with two penalties on the drive (which actually gook 95 yards).

PHS Win Streak Ends:
GW Pulls 19-14 Upset
The streak is over.
George Washington's Drew Kinder threw for 220 yards and three touchdowns as the Patriots ended Parkersburg's 21-game winning streak with a 19-14 upset at Charleston's Laidley Field in a meeting between number one ranked PHS and number three ranked GW.
The Big Reds got another fine effort from Matt Lindamood, who scored both his team's touchdowns and gained 154 yards on 29 carries, but suffered two key turnovers, one leading to a GW touchdown and the other halting a PHS late scoring drive.
Neither team could generate any offense in the first quarter but PHS began the second quarter by putting together a 15-play, 82 yard drive that ate 7:46 off the clock and was all on the ground. Lindamood carried seven times on the drive, including the final five plays in a row. The TD came on a six yard run with 5:09 left in the half. Tyler Warner's kick made it 7-0.
A Big Red miscue helped GW tie the game just before the half. A bobbled PHS punt return put the Patriots in business on the PHS 33 yard line. Then came a third down pass interference call, giving GW a first down on the PHS 16 yard line. On a fourth and one play at the eight, Christian Perkins picked up the chain mover and on the next play Kinder found Beau Wilson, who had curled back to catch the ball on the one yard line and then spun into the end zone to complete a five yard touchdown play with just 12 seconds on the clock. Wilson, an old-style straight-ahead kicker, then booted the extra point to make it 7-7.
PHS came out to start the second half and again rode the running of Lindamood to a touchdown. A 25 yard run was the big play on a 62 yard drive that took 4:15 and a total of eight plays. The TD came on a nine yard run with 7:45 on the game clock. Warner's kick put PHS up 14-7.
But GW played a nearly perfect second half to pull out the win. Kinder completed all nine passes he tried, including scoring completions of 31 and 29 yards to Tucker. On one of the TD catches, Tucker went up between two Big Red defenders just inside the end zone and brought down the ball for the score. The first TD came on a 73-yard, five play drive while the second covered 60 yards and took eight plays with the go-ahead score coming with 5:42 left in the third quarter.
PHS had three possessions in the fourth quarter, moving the ball each time only to come up short. The first ended on a fourth down play at the GW 38 while the second was halted with 1:59 left in the game when Thomas threw an interception after moving the ball to the Patriot 25. PHS got the ball back with 57 seconds remaining and moved into GW territory at the 44 but with two seconds remaining, Thomas' pass to Wes Ankrom was caught at the 15 yard line as time expired.
The statistics were as even as the game as PHS had a 19-17 margin in first downs and a 224-70 advantage in rushing yardage. George Washington had a 220-60 margin in passing yards as Kinder finished with 18 completions on 25 attempts with one interception (Derek Wenzel's fifth of the year). The GW quarterback completed all nine of his second half pass attempts and hit on his last 11 pass attempts in the game. Overall, GW ran 53 plays for 290 yards while PHS ran 57 plays for 284 yards. Thomas finished with 53 yards rushing on 10 attempts and completed five of 13 passes with Ankrom and Stephen Roush each catching two.
The Big Reds were playing without the services of all-state linebacker Matt Littleton, who injured a knee against Parkersburg South.
