Lindamood's 4 TDs, Bridgeport's 7 Turnovers Equals 45-13 PHS Rout
Matt Lindamood's four touchdowns plus Bridgeport's seven turnovers equaled a 45-13 rout for the PHS Big Reds in the quarterfinals of the Class AAA football playoffs Saturday afternoon at Stadium Field.
Now 11-1, PHS will travel to Morgantown on Friday night, Nov. 23, to meet second-ranked University, a 24-13 winner over Capital in the other quarterfinal game of the bottom bracket. Bridgeport, ranked number six coming into the game, finished with a 10-2 record.
Although Bridgeport scored on its first possession of the game, putting together a nine-play, 80-yard drive that was capped by Sean Snider's 29 yard quarterback scramble, the Indians had their extra point blocked by Lindamood.
The Big Reds quickly answered that with an eight-play, 73-yard drive that was capped by a 40-yard run around right end by Lindamood as he scored the first of his four touchdowns. Tyler Warner kicked the extra point to make it 7-6 with 3:48 left in the first quarter and gave PHS the lead for good.
Lindamood gained 176 yards on 24 carries to push his season's total to 2,143 yards and his TD total has now reached 33 - both PHS school records.
The two teams then exchanged punts before Parkersburg's defense began playing takeaway at an amazing rate.
Warner's punt to the Bridgeport 20 yard line was muffed by Wes Tonkery and Brandon Eckelberry recovered at the 22 yard line. Although PHS moved to a first and goal at the nine, the Bridgeport defense stiffened and Warner had to come on to kick a 21 yard field goal with 8:51 left before the half.
Two plays later Jason Phillips forced another fumble and Andy Thomas recovered at the Bridgeport 34 yard line. Six plays later Thomas scored on a three yard run after faking a pitch to Lindamood. Warner's kick made it 17-6 with 5:31 on the clock. Chris Row had the big play on the drive, a 13-yard run.
Tonkery fumbled the ball away on the ensuing kickoff return and PHS took over with Anthony Thorpe recovering at the Bridgeport 22. Six plays later Lindamood followed the blocking of Chris James and Josh Jenkins for the final yard. Warner's kick made it 24-6 with 2:31 remaining before the half.
Although PHS had to punt the ball away on its first possession of the second half, Bridgeport promptly fumbled it back with Thomas grabbing the ball on the bounce and running 55 yards to the end zone. That touchdown and PAT made it 31-6 with 8:56 left in the third quarter.
Bridgeport scored on a 20 yard pass from Sean Snider to Michael Gladden and PHS had to punt the ball away after seven plays. Bridgeport started from its own 19 with 1:49 left in the quarter only to have Thorpe come up with an interception and 29 yard return to the Indian five yard line. It then took Lindamood just one play to score as he took a pitch around left end and scored standing up with 29 seconds left in the third quarter.
The visitors took the ensuing kickoff and drove to the PHS 25 before Michael Winans came up with an interception off a tip by Lindamood. The Big Reds then drove 89 yards in nine plays with Lindamood scoring from 19 yards away. Warner's kick made it 45-13.
The final turnover came with 4:58 to play when Eckelberry recovered a bobble at the Bridgeport 35.
So for those keeping track, Thomas and Eckelberry had two fumble recoveries each while Thorpe had an interception and a fumble recovery and Winans an interception. Phillips and Winans (filling in for his injured brother Matt) were the leading tacklers. Matt Littleton was in uniform on the sidelines and is expected to play next week against University.
Both teams had 14 first downs and ran 53 offensive plays. Bridgeport finished with 135 yards on the ground to Parkersburg's 244. In the air, the Indians were 13 of 21 for 158 yards while PHS was five of eight for 45 yards. PHS turned all but the final Bridgeport turnover into points, five touchdowns and one field goal. PHS had no turnovers and only two penalties.
